He was a classic. One of the best guys I ever got to meet.
One of my favorite Layden quotes. After they drafted Dominque Wilkins they traded him, basically for a million dollars cash. When the press asked Layden about the deal he said: âDominique? I thought we traded Jeff Wilkinsâ
Hereâs my favorite quote from Frank Layden:
âI told him, âSon, what is it with you?
Is it ignorance or apathy?â He said,
'Coach, I donât know and I donât care.â
In his early days as coach, Layden presided over some bad Jazz teams. Attendance was poor. Apparently, someone asked him what time the next game was. Layden replied, âWhat time can you be there?â
Unfortunately weâve lost another unique character. This time, to the same terrible disease that took my mother-in-law, Lewy body dementia.
Now the whole North rim is shut down cuz the water treatmen plant got it too. RiP seasonal jobs and revinue on the North rim
If only they had been raking the desert. ![]()
You know, there was a time long, long ago when west of the Mississippi burned vast amounts of acreage every year. That said, itâs sad when a public treasure burns in one of these fires. The North Rim is an amazing place to visit, and was regularly on my itinerary when we vacationed in Southern Utah.
If I wasnât such an old bastard, I would be looking forward to seeing nature rebound around the Lodge and cabins, and the work to rebuild. It was amazing to see Yellowstone recover from its fire. I hope others get to enjoy the same for the Grand Canyon.
I used to fly Grand Canyon tours out of Las Vegas, so that big hole has a special place in my heart.
@330ute What were the vortexes like on trips over the canyon in heat conditions?
Thank you for providing a once in a lifetime experience to people safely!
Early morning flights were usually smooth and uneventful, after that, full barf bags were plentiful, and disposing of them was the worst part of the job !! I will say that watching people enjoy the beauty of the Canyon was very rewarding.
Is that a De Havilland Twin Otter?
Summertime convective turbulence in small planes is a good way to return to being a solo pilot.
I would fly one of my kids and one or two of his 12 year old teammates to competition baseball tournaments. They all thought it was awesome how weâd pass their families on the freeway like they were parked. Then the star player - who would go on to become the star HS QB - blew chunks into the bag, then it wasnât as cool.
One time I flew a young cancer patient and her hubby home to St George via Angelflight on a July afternoon. It was a real bucking bronco, especially on approach to the old SGU on the mesa, but smoothed out at landing. They said I did much better than Sky West, which amazed me! No wonder they built the new airport way out of town on the flats.
My days of owning a small plane dwindled down after the wife refused a thousand trip ideas. âPeople go to Lagoon, they donât use the rides at Lagoon to go to the store.â
Yeah, I worked up in the Tetons during the fires of 1988 that struck Yellowstone and the Tetons so strongly. Iâve enjoyed going back over the years to see how things changed. As rough as the fires can be immediately, theyâre needed to help keep the forests and wildlands vibrant.
Ironically it is likely that years of very active forest fire suppression led to the loss of that piece of history. Disrupting the natural forest life cycle by suppressing fires just makes things worse.
Heard they are going to let it burn, likely into August.
Visiting the North Rim a couple of years ago when I stopped to pay at the booth I asked the ranger, âSo, is it really that grand?â As a joke. Without missing a beat as he handed me my pass he said, âItâs alright⌠just keep driving down this road, stop when you get to the big hole.â
North Rim is the best place to visit the canyon IMO. Sad it burned.
I enjoy Little Colorado River Canyon near the South Rim, too.
