I remember that documentary. If I call this guy ate only at McDonalds 3 meals a day for a period of time to see what the effect would be on his weight/ health.

I’m pretty sure it was for a month and he would super size it if they asked. It was a pretty sobering look at how his health suffered in a short period of time.

Scott Pierce TV critic from the DNews died.

Former Ute DL Greg Newman passed away. He was a DE, but he and Derrick Shelby moved inside when injuries hit the DL on the Sugar Bowl team.

What a remarkable letter from his family.

I hope the changes in protocol and new helmet designs have helped lessen the CTE issue, but more needs to be done.

Among baseball players, catchers deal with issues, soccer has headers, etc.

I’m going to pitch in on the GoFundMe. (I need to dine out a little less, anyway.)

Me too… I know kids who played soccer for a team for which I was an assistant coached 20-ish years ago, (friends of my son’s, it was a high-school aged competitive/traveling team, but nothing approaching semi, or professional) who still have problems, not to the extent we’re generally discussing here, but who have occasional/regular migraine-sorts of problems, that while not life altering or debilitating, are NOT good.

I think I’ve told the story here in the past, that as a young boy, in the 60’s, perhaps 10-ish, another boy hit me on the head with a small boulder, knocking me out for a few minutes. I stumbled home eventually and slumped into bed with a massive headache. I recall almost nothing about the next 2 weeks, except that I went to the hospital, was diagnosed with a concussion, had the worst headache and flu-like symptoms of my life, and had inexplicable and regular migraines and flu-like episodes for about the next 15 years.

I thank God, regularly that I got past it as it was a difficult period in my life, Whenever I had one of “those” days, I would expect to sleep for 24 hours, throwing up, and then spend a few days getting back to normal.

The doctors would never have any sort of explanation, but I sort of intuitively always knew it was from the hit on the head.

Later in life, when I started playing and coaching soccer, a sport I never played as a kid, and starting learning to perform a header, I had a brief return of those symptoms for the fist time in years and NEVER afterward hit the ball with my head. While coaching, I always discouraged the kids from ever heading and always taught alternative and minimal impact header heading techniques.

Damn. No more stream of consciousness broadcasts. The world will be a little less weird now, and we’re all at a loss for it.

I attended the University of San Diego Law School in 82-83 before finishing at BYU. Walton was rehabbing some injury and would show up most every day at the USD gym to work on his game. There were other NBA guys and some college guys as well. I was there a lot and Bill was kind enough to let me play on his pickup team a few times. He was always laughing and always friendly. He would sometimes drive me crazy as a broadcaster, but I think he was just being himself. RIP
