RIP. Seemed like a cool guy.
Jimmy Carter passed away today
Jimmy’s post presidency was a commitment to service no other former president will ever be able to compare with.
I would say his presidency was also an example of self-lessness.
He appointed Paul Volcker as the Fed Chair after hearing how he intended to tame inflation by boosting interest rates, knowing the combination of high interest rates and inflation - the so-called “misery index” - made his own re-election prospects a long shot. It had to be done, so Carter did it.
It’s fairly common these days for people to be cynical about religion and to denigrate believers as fools or miscreants. Jimmy Carter is an impressive example to temper those kinds of criticisms. He put his money - and his energy - where his heart was, a great example of investing in something bigger than yourself.
+1.
Whatever your thoughts on his presidency, Carter was just an exemplary human being.
After leaving office, he and his beloved wife spent decades with Habitat for Humanity helping the less fortunate. The most moral and Christian president we have had in my lifetime.
Ah, the hours I spent listening to him in the 60’s on my transistor radio…
“And always remember Skinny loves your neck. Good night!”
I heard his, “Paul McCartney is dead,” stuff in 1969 and it totally freaked me out. He was a classic DJ, though, back in the days where they actually had a say in what they played on the radio.
Lynn Lehmann, Woolly Waldron, Skinny Johnny Mitchell… the holy trifecta of KCPX 1320
If you remember this guy from the 60’s you’ll probably remember his partner Lynn Lehmann, and the famed Lehmann Lemon Award (two hilarious examples noted in the article).
Here’s a link to a Trib article from some years ago, that will bring back some great memories.
Our Jr High coach (Thomas) won a Lehman award (hit an unfortunate seagull while golfing on the school lawn) and displayed it in his office.
I’m listening to Peter, Paul and Mary as we speak in tribute. And “Puff, the Magic Dragon” was not about drugs, according to Peter, but I guess it’s a fun urban myth!
Damn, that one hits.
Mom and dad LOVED Peter, Paul, and Mary. One of my most vivid memories of my dad is him playing his guitar and singing “Puff the Magic Dragon” to make me feel better when I was sick. To this day, I have a hard time hearing that song without breaking into tears.
This is like saying Santa Claus is not real., or the Easter Bunny is not an ex-con just trying to help the dairy industry.
Just. Stop.
Sam Moore from the soul duo Sam & Dave passed away. I was introduced to them by watching the movie “The Blues Brothers” when I was 10 years old. They had some great songs!
