Quirky Facts

Since it’s the off-season, I thought it might be fun to try a new activity. This could potentially be more enjoyable than bickering and arguing about who killed who.

The idea is to share weird trivia facts. The criteria here is to post facts that are quirky coincidences, peculiar connections, or just mind-blowing facts, stuff that makes you go, “Oh wow, I had no idea, that’s interesting!” Nothing is too trivial here.

To start, I will list a few examples.

  1. The first two California/L.A. Angels Rookie of the Year winners were Tim Salmon and Mike Trout.

  2. The two actors who played the MASH character Henry Blake, McLean Stevenson on the TV show and Roger Bowen in the film, died one day apart, on February 15th and 16th, respectively, in 1996.

  3. Actor John Cazale, who died from lung cancer at the age of 42 in 1978, only appeared in five feature films in his career. All five were Best Picture Oscar nominees, namely: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part Two, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter.

Feel free to post something interesting here, maybe just one or two at a time? Keep some of your powder dry for future posts.

The one member of ZZ Top that did NOT have the signature trademark beard was named Frank Beard.

Indianapolis is further east than Nashville.

In my mind, Indiana is part of the “Midwest” and Tennessee is part of the “Southeast”. It hurt my brain when I went out there for a convention. My brother came in from Nashville and we were both surprised to learn that Indy is on Eastern time and Nashville is on Central.

Most of Ohio is east of Atlanta. Same - midwest vs. SE. Maps are fun. Miami seems ‘east’, but all of New England is much more east. Miami is closer to Chicago east-to-west than Miami is to Boston.

Due to their rigid spine and thick neck muscles, pigs cannot look straight up into the sky. I’m not sure this is 100% accurate, as a couple of years ago I saw one look straight up at a solar eclipse with no protection.
