I’ve always had a friendly feeling toward Notre Dame, but that is starting to erode.

Notre Dame is not what they once were. The college football landscape has changed and with the proliferation of telecasts of games across the country, anyone can follow their team anywhere in the country. The exclusivity NBC had with their Notre Dame contract does not have the same cache.

While Notre Dame is still a top brand I’m not sure they hold more value than any of the other blue bloods. And not participating in a conference reduces risk of a loss in a conference championship game as well as the rigors of a regular conference.schedule. They should not receive a special carve out when it comes to the college football playoffs.

I haven’t read everything on this yet, but it sounds like they are saying that if they’re ranked in the top 12, they get a spot in the playoff no matter what. That’s astonishing. Well, outrageous. It’s hard to find the right adjectives. I came up with an economic term from my long-ago study of econ: rent-seeking, or behavior in which a person, company, or group tries to gain income or advantages without creating any new value. That fits, doesn’t it?
