I know three things from watching my son go through a sort of medium change in form, in 8th grade:

  1. it is very difficult psychologically (especially for a young person) if they have been successful with the old form - you inevitably get a lot worse in the short term, before you start to get eventually better,
  2. it takes an enormous amount of patience, dedication and hard work by the player, and a HUGE amount of reassurance and support by coaches (and parents when the player is as young as my son was)
  3. it’s worth it

My guess is that college coaches only really take it on when the player’s form is very bad, and the player has the mental fortitude to stay dedicated to improvement.

Every basketball player update is a feeling of dread. Every. One.

For me it’s more like a feeling of, “Oh, there’s a new guy working the counter at Kinko’s.”

I’m a fan of his game/physicality. Hopeful he also has it between the ears.
