I’m watching the opening ceremonies, such a beautiful city.
Oh! I just stepped on your thread! I didn’t look. Sorry, I will jump over.
I’m not really a pageantry guy, but the opening ceremony was impressive.
Give the French credit for being creative - the boat parade reminded me of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Merci beaucoup for being way different than Beijing.
Celine Dion was great. The whole thing was pretty original. Sincerely.
I wish the Manning Brothers would simulcast badminton, in a David Ortiz / Brian Urlacher kind of way. (If admitting you’re culturally damaged is the first step, consider this a public admission)
Does DoorDash deliver snails?
I’m dialed in, now.
I was hoping the Olympic cauldron would end up a top the Eiffel Tower, but the floating balloon thing was pretty cool too.
Ouaou! Bravo Monsieur.
DoorDash just left. The escargot was the perfect accompaniment to this evening’s cocktails, soixante quinze .
Culturellement endommagé en effet
Seriously though, your post was a fun surprise, but I came here to commiserate with the French over their troubles with the high speed train lines, what a disaster! Rhetorically: Is there going to be someone who feels compelled to attempt to ruin everything?!?
I thought the opening was complex, provocative and well, oh so French!
The games have begun.
Let’s hope everyone is safe and we observe the best amongst us all.
On a Saturday morning before the coffee has kicked in, I wandered over to CB to see if there were any giggles to be harvested.
Sure enough the Prudes de Provo are offended at an apparent ménage a trois scene in the opening ceremony.
“Guys, guys, guys….It’s the Frenchie way of addressing the falling birth rate, OK? Besides, check me if I’m wrong, but your school’s namesake had a Ménage a Trente!”
(In another thread, in an apparent spontaneous “scary movie night” bonding session, they were advising one of their own, who is contemplating a road trip to watch the Cougs play at Laramie.)
The amount of (mostly American) pearl clutching over the opening ceremonies was absolutely hilarious.
I thought they were fantastic, creative, and very uniquely French. They did an awesome job.
The number of commercials in this broadcast is seriously ridiculous. Pretty sure the ratio of broadcast to commercial is about 1:1 right now.
The kids were really interested in watching the volleyball, judo, and water polo this morning, but got bored and wandered off because there are SO many commercials.
Governor Spencer Cox tweeted that he was offended at the opening ceremonies (hard eye roll)
Its fascinating the things people will take offense at while simultanously turning a blind eye elsewhere. I’m in danger of turning this political so “pas plus.”
“I’m offended and demand to speak to the manager of France!”
I’m offended at him for the bills he chose to sign, so…
Saw something this morning that made me say WTF. I thought I heard them say that the pool for swimming is more shallow than normal. Did anyone else hear that? They said that would make the pool “slower” due to increased turbulence. I thought Olympic pools were standard length, width, and depth.
They’ve had a bit of a drought in Francia… and well… the snails needed the water!
I hate to be THAT, but I just hate the Olympics more than anything. The last time I watched an Olympic anything was the gold medal game at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics. Unfortunately, the players from the Great White North won. Probably lots of poutine helped.
I can see not being interested in the Olympics or maybe being ambivalent towards the Olympics, but “hating” the Olympics is a little weird.
Excessive commercials aside, I’ve really enjoyed watching today. We’ve watched rugby (both the bronze and gold medal matches in rugby 7’s were awesome), judo, fencing, basketball, water polo, handball, table tennis, cycling, soccer, volleyball, kayaking, and beach volleyball. It’s cool to me to watch freakish athletes doing freakish athlete things, but ymmv.
I’ve always said they should have a “regular joe” do these same sports for comparisons sake, just so people can see how truly amazing Olympic-level athletes really are.
Exactly. I really enjoy the summer games, but haven’t watched any winter games for a long time, maybe 40 years. But I don’t hate skiing and skating. I’m just not interested, but I get that they are really good athletes.
Edit to add: I have my TV on a 4 way split screen, so I can see 4 events at once. Right at this moment it’s equestrian, judo, cycling, and fencing. Real fencing is waaaayyy different than movie fencing.
I like them both. I always cry during the opening and the closing ceremonies. I also cry watching the expressions of the athletes and the interchange amongst each other.
All we need to see is the most exemplary human performance with equal amounts of grace. It’s a small planet after all.
I remember being a kid and watching Olympic boxing and loving it, maybe because professional boxing was such an event back then.
Incidentally, there are seven current Utes paticipating in the games this year.
My favorite Olympic event is Nordic Skiing. Largely, because it is a sport I participate in personally, at an Old-guy level.
Watching the world class skiing by both men and women is to me the same as watching the world class tennis at Wimbledon, and the world class cycling at the TDF, also both sports I participate in at an amateur level.
If you’ve tried it yourself, there is inevitably a real appreciation for watching people who perform at the highest level.
