Just mirror the FCS. 24 teams. All 10 conference champs are rewarded and nobody in the next 14 without a shot gets left out. No weaknesses in the FCS system. would translate into great playoff FBS football. Won’t happen but should.
This is a huge assumption on the part of fans. Playing a lower seed in the NCAA tournament in hoops they don’t start second-stringers. The funny thing to me is a fanbase that wants to eliminate G5 teams is the one who was most recently a G5. Sorry, but adding 4 more teams makes zero sense. Those teams tend to be not on the same level as 1 and 2. In fact, 3 and 4 oftentimes shouldn’t be given a shot.
Is the goal to be fair or is it the goal to get better games? If it’s the latter leave it alone or go back to the BCS model.
Advocating for 8 would have given us this last season:
- Alabama vs 8. Cincinnati
- Notre Dame vs. 5. Texas A&M
- Ohio State vs. 6. Oklahoma
- Clemson vs. 7. Florida
Yawn. You guys are advocating for a playoff with nearly half the teams are SEC.
Let’s do 2019.
- LSU vs. 8. Alabama
- Georgia vs 5. Oregon
- Ohio State vs 6. Florida
- Clemson vs 7. Oklahoma
Now, you give the SEC 50% of the playoff.
For arguments sake I looked at 2018, 50% SEC.
Ok. Let’s do this. Let’s add a P5 Champion team to the past playoffs and give a spot for the three at large.
2020 we replace Cincinnati at #8 for the 4-2 #25 Oregon Ducks:
- Alabama vs 8. Oregon
- Notre Dame vs. 5. Texas A&M
- Ohio State vs. 6. Oklahoma
- Clemson vs. 7. Florida
Yawn. You guys are advocating for a playoff with nearly half the teams are SEC.
2019 with zero changes.
- LSU vs. 8. Alabama
- Georgia vs 5. Oregon
- Ohio State vs 6. Florida
- Clemson vs 7. Oklahoma
Now, you give the SEC 50% of the playoff.
2018 Playoff you replace #8 Georgia for #13 Washington at 10-4.
- Clemson vs. 8. Washington
- Oklahoma vs 5. Notre Dame
- Ohio State vs 6. LSU
- Alabama vs 7. Florida
2017 replace #8 11-2 Penn State for #12 SC 11-3
- Alabama vs. 8. Southern Cal
- Clemson vs 5. Ohio State
- Oklahoma vs 6. UCF
- Georgia vs 7. Wisconsin
2016
- Alabama vs. 8. Wisconsin
- Washington vs 5. Penn State
- Ohio State vs 6. Michigan
- Clemson vs 7. Oklahoma
This is the rare year you get 50% Big 1G. I think replacing a legit #8 for the Pac 12 champ will piss some fanbases off.
Those matchups are poll-based.
I’d say auto-bids from P5, then 3 at large. Conference play has to count for something. If that keeps out Cindarella… have to draw the line somewhere.
16 would go a long way toward wrecking the historic bowl system. (There’s too many bowl games right now, granted)
If there are potentially 4 extra games for a team, does scheduling go back to 11 games? That argument won’t go anywhere. Too much collective money to be lost.
I redid it with that and we’re replacing legit #8s for teams barely in the Top 15. I’m going to call it the Varsity Blues Admissions Playoff. You have to know someone and be wealthy to get in. Autobids for P5 or P4 are LAME. You are inherently setup to be top 8 if you are good.
I’m someone who loves Petty so, I can get behind that.
Is it though? If players having control over their likeness and being compensated for their work ruined this sport for you, I’m sorry.
They do that pre-NIL. Come play for us we had X, Y, & Z drafted. We also have this program that helps with this life goal of yours.
When I went on a recruiting visit to Vandy (for a kid I knew being recruited) they literally said, “We’re going to offer you $250,000 and a lifetime of major business connections.” In the scenario you are describing Rocker is really a rare talent. It also goes the other way.
I think this is the better argument. If you prefer College football to be single A minor league where you basically have NAIA Football then that works. Have all the 3* and above go to a pseudo AAA System. I just think it’s weird to count what is in an athlete’s pockets as if modern day sports are like the days when horse racing and boxing were king.
Well the part about the 4* isn’t true but that’s not why we are here to discuss. I think Utah is positioned better than Alabama in the age of NIL for kids. Alabama is not made a more desirable spot by NIL. Utah is based on the amount of businesses in the area compared to an Alabama or Starkville, Mississippi. Heck, y’all got walk-ons on one private school getting full rides due to NIL. NIL to me is a benefit more than a minus.
Does this change in a couple of year, it remains to be see. I just will always side on the side of players making money over institutions hoarding the major profits.
I guess so, yeah. 8 or no expansion. And the 8 need some autbids because we really don’t have enough cross-conference games (which hopefully Alliance can help with). There’s always bias in rankings, even bcs and cfp committee. But it would be the argument over the 9th the instead of the 5th. Oh well.
The 17 games are the number of games in the 16 team playoff (up from 3). The inventory for TV. It’s a lot. Maybe too much. I would watch only some.
We have enough stations and timeslots to carry 17 games. You should see how the NCAA basketball tournament does theirs.
Edit: Please stop, I’m bored. You are so smart and only your opinion matters. No one can have a different one. The writer of a post can’t understand it better than you. Strawman arguments are so effective. You are a big man and like to act like people don’t get it and are idiots. I’m sorry you have bad habits in human communication and like to pick fights trying to make people feel small while not actually debating with counterpoints. All, hail, @BamaFanNKY !
I will not watch that many games. Championship weekend is too much and has better games than a 1st round would have. And I sometimes take a day or two off to watch early NCAA tourney games, so yes, I’m well aware how that all works out, thank you.
I directly gave a counter argument to your “17 games are a lot” with an example of the NCAA tournament. What other point would you like me to expand on?
I even broke down how the 8 team model doesn’t accomplish a better tournament and just benefits the power conferences. I even went in and showed how replacing an 8 seed with a good record for a P5 that couldn’t make it was sort of unfair.
I think you are being a little thin skinned. It’s a stupid football forum. It’s not religion or politics.
Edit: I will go and like your posts. I don’t want you to feel bad.
I never said 17 games was too much to broadcast so your counterpoint was to nothing. You have a bad habit of being disagreeable when people disagree with you and you pick fights. It’s just old. You are right - this is a sports board and nothing here will impact anything about any of this.
Don’t give me pity stars. I don’t care nor want them.
I don’t ignore people until they reach ‘douche canoe’ status. You’re pretty close. I’ve been on utefans for who knows how long, probably 12-15 years. I know how it works, but somehow you feel like you’re some gift to the board and can enlighten us. If instead it was a threat to ignore or mute me on your side, please.
You’ll get those pity stars and you will like them. Seriously though. I addressed your exact argument. I’ve been on the board since 2009 advocating for a fair 16 team playoff. Most back then we’re all for it. It’s now barely half. The only reason is because Utah is now a P5.
I will say yours is unique because you won’t watch 17 games and you don’t think anyone past 8 has a shot. It’s really been shown that past 5 there really isn’t a shot. I think you could make a better case for 6. A play in for the 4 seed.
Don’t necessarily disagree with that. I think some schools will see less money coming in to be a stadium cup sponsor or whatever. It’s why the NIL isn’t that big of a deal. Olineman being able to be a spokesperson for a rib joint or be on a podcast seems to be a good thing. Not only does it prepare them for their future if they go to the NFL it may help them if they don’t.
