Logo Question

U Logo

Saw a picture on Twitter of a vintage Utah clock. I remember this logo, I’m thinking it was early 70s, right after they changed from the Runnin’ Redskins to the Runin’ Utes. Other people on the thread are saying mid to late 80s.

Anyone remember this logo? @NewbombTurk, @LAUte?

I think it’s 80’s

Circa 1985.

This logo really is an anachronism, after we became the Utes but clearly hadn’t left behind some of the redskins imagery.

I imagine the tribe’s perspective has evolved along the way.

Thankfully we don’t see the tomahawk chop chant, ala Florida State. Equally glad we left behind the dumb Book of Mormon stories song lead in to the old Hollywood war chant song, or whatever that was. Sheesh.

Keep it simple and respectful, whatever the tribe thinks is appropriate. I really hope they keep offering the Ute Proud apparel.

I don’t remember this logo at all, and I attended the U starting in 1980.

I had a shirt with that logo that we bought at the bookstore in the mid 1980’s.

I vaguely remember that, although I was just a very young child in the early 1970s.

Anyway, I can’t place when I saw it, but it does seem old. If it was in the late 70s or early 80s, I would remember it.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Utes always our nickname, since like the 1800’s or whatever? I thought “redskins” was used as an alternate, occasionally and only for a relatively brief period, before being retired. So it’s not like we “switched” in that sense.

My father had this exact clock and my brother had a shirt with it on. I think 80s is correct.

My dad had several items from the 40’s and 50’s that said Utah Redskins including a rubber doll that was a caricature of an Indian.

Yeah I looked it up, what I found is below. Learned some new stuff, super interesting. Redskins was one of many unofficial nicknames over the years.

Although the Utes nickname and associated imagery has become indelibly related to the University of Utah, it is not the first nickname for the University. In 1892, the University approved Crimson and Silver as the school colors, and until the mid-1920s, athletic teams and students were mainly referred to as “the Crimson.” Rather, the Utes nickname and associated imagery and mascots developed in an ad hoc way through a series of campus traditions over about 80 years.

In the mid- to late-1920s, as seen in the archives of the Daily Utah Chronicle (student-run newspaper) and the Utonian (student-run yearbook), the terms “Indians,” “Utes,” “Redskins,” and “Redskin Braves” began appearing and were used interchangeably to refer to athletic teams and students at the University of Utah.

Then of course, in 1972 the university adopted “Utes” as its first-ever official nickname and stopped using everything else.

I remember vividly buying game programs in or around 1985 that had this logo. I also had a sweatshirt with this logo that I got for Christmas 1984 or 1985.
