Lindsey Vonn Injured

Well this sucks. Her comeback has been amazing. I guess there’s still hope, but this doesn’t seem good.

(Lindsey Vonn crashes, injured in final race before Winter Olympics)

It’s hard to imagine she didn’t blow her ACL or tear a menisus. Usually, as soon as a skier’s butt hits the snow the uphill ski keeps moving, and this applies too much force and leverage on the joint. KaPOW! That’s why folks are trained to get those skis up in the air and slide on their back. I’m not sure if she was able to unweight that ski.
Hoping for the best

Lindsey Vonn plans to compete in Olympics despite torn ACL sustained in fall - Yahoo Sports Lindsey Vonn plans to compete in Olympics despite torn ACL sustained in fall - Yahoo Sports

So, my armchair diagnosis was aparently correct: she ruptured her ACL. Now, some people do just fine skiing again without reconstruction, but a week later at 80MPH? Oooof!!
I am deffinitely concerned.

Horrible wipeout in the finals.

I haven’t followed this particularly closely, but my understanding is that she pretty much destroyed her knee a week ago, the doctors said “eh, rub some dirt on it”, and now she’s had an awful crash that is likely a career ender. That about sums it up?

If so, I feel like the obvious question must be asked: Why the HELL was she still competing after shredding her knee?!? I get that it’s a devastating injury, but just having her wrap it up and go back out there seems ridiculous. No athlete ever wants to shut things down for injury, especially that close to the competition. That’s when the doctors have to step up and make them listen.

This whole situation seems insane to me.

Hubris. She posted the 3rd best time in the prelims. She’s a warrior princess, but I can’t help be feel a younger reserve skier who had been training for years and years and would benefit to live her Olympic dreams as well.

The USA’s best racer in Vonn’s event blew her knee out in November and is in Salt Lake instead of Italy (she participated in the city’s watch party Friday)

So the team is a bit decimated.

My understanding is that with a brace, she (and others) can still be competitive without an ACL. Not ideal, but possible. The crash was from clipping the 4th gate which spun her around. She wanted to win and was taking a tight line and just got a little too tight. So, it was full aggression, not really her knee - she risked it and didn’t turn out. Broke a leg.

In a good note, her teammate won gold (Breezy Johnson).
