We just got “shelter in place” warnings on the University network. Apparently a larger >50 acre fire started in the hills east of the Huntsman and it’s sounding bad. Anyone have any insight or recommendations for best news coverage?
Be safe!
Good Thread on Reddit. Apparently they have evacuated Red Butte Garden’s. Looks like this thing is running! :
I just had a alert on my phone from some organization at the U, but since I could not identify who it was from, so I could figure out what credentials to use to read it, I got only the alert, and not the useful information (are you disseminating public information or managing security protocols!?!)
OK, several arson fires set last night. One burnt a RMP pole and not only a pole but an underground underground riser. A suspect was arrested this evening. Is likely related.
I was on an incident response call for most of yesterday evening on that fire. I’ve hiked all over Mt Van Cott just east of Huntsman Cancer and UHosp, it’s mostly grass with some scrub oak higher.
The crews seemed to (wisely, IMO) let that grass fire burn out. No redwoods up there, let alone Douglas Fir, let alone Juniper forest. Fewer hills to deal with fires on later.
Later they made a small back fire to get things better contained before the wee hours.
Cajun colored grass hills must make a firefighter feel some relief. “Mark that one off the list”.
Haven’t seen a Sikorsky helo (beside the Sky Crane) doing fires before, presumably scooped water from Red Butte Canyon reservoir. This photo right next to BSL trail. (Fringe benefit for trail runners - easier to see the rattlers now.)
Yep, depending on wind direction, there’s a LOT of grass & oak brush east and south into Red Butte Canyon or north into Dry Creek canyon (aka Elizabeth Smart canyon).
I’ve seen small groups of those firefighters with very small fires on the hills. Tough dudes, much better than me with a shovel!
Edit - if you zoom out on the Watch Duty app to get a broader look. Arizona’s pretty active, but I was surprised to see Florida with so many. Not sure if it’s just conditions, or just lots of Florida Man pyro activity.
