I like this idea

It’s nice to see the USL making the move to put their league structurally on par with the rest of the world of soccer by adopting a Promotion - Relegation system. Regardless of what the MLS “thinks” right now they only have a handful of relevant teams, and the competition level is still “Minor League” versus the rest of the world. By setting a more level financial standard and forcing owners to invest in their teams to stay relevant works pretty well. On a soccer front, the move may eventually get our best talent to stay home and compete, giving the USMNT more of a chance to improve their game.

On another sports front, the NBA needs a system like this too. Watching the annual race to the lottery we have had a front row seat to, don’t you think maybe if the Jazz would have used more of a sense of urgency in improvement than what we have seen?

It’s worth thinking about.

I think I like it too, at least in concept. The race to the bottom in the NBA, or NFL really does get old. Seeing the same teams continuously be bad gets old. Perhaps a system that incentivizes improvement is the way to go.

Couple of thoughts.

  1. MLS is long overdue for promotion/relegation. Teams right now play just one time against about half the teams in the other division. Teams should really face everyone home/away every year.
  2. NBA promotion/relegation could indeed curb the tanking to finish as low as possible if finishing near/at the bottom meant dropping to the lower division (G league or whatever it is called). Unthinkable that an EPL team would lose on purpose if it meant dropping to the championship (second division) where TV revenue is a fraction of what is made in the top flight. Wonder do any of the European hoops leagues have that type of system?

Given what just happened with the House Ruling, maybe pro sports ought to just drop the drafts and just go to signing people like soccer does it. The only time Soccer ever has a “Draft” is when a new franchise comes online (MLS only and NWSL only). With promotion-relegation, and new team would simply start at the bottom and have to work its way up.

Yes, this would basically kill college sports as we now know it.
