I’ll start.
Began with Judo in my youth, pickup wrestling with my buddies as a school-boy. Late teens early 20’s, Tai Kwon Do, Jeet Kune Do and Boxing/Kick Boxing. Last 6 years, Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, MMA striking - both structured classes and open mat sparring at Sierra MMA https://www.instagram.com/sierra_m_m_a/?hl=en
Not me, at least not since I was a kid. Mrs CCU on the other hand is an instructor for her school of karate, 2nd or 3rd degree Black Belt. Doesn’t mean much except she’s good to have her own dojo and teach under the auspices of the IKL (1 or 2 dojos in SLC valley).
A handful of men and women who roll or strike are also BB and own karate gyms. While Karate may not be worldbeating overall for defense, it’s a very important and respected discipline. Also fun/safe introduction for kids and adults.
Brava Sensei!

Training in Krav Maga, my 1st year.
Still got your fingers? How’s it compare to others?
I’ve taken Tai Kwon Do classes and boxing training 20 years ago, Krav Maga is great as it focuses on real world self defense and opponent weapon disarming techniques.
One of the things I like about grappling is the ability to control a larger opponent. Never tried KM but I hear good things about that studio
I trained in Taekwondo in my late teens/early 20’s. Just didn’t have time to stick with it.
My buddy went on a mission to South Korea and trained 6 mornings a week for those two years. Came back a 2nd degree Black Belt.
I did start wrestling in grade school and went all the way to high school. Won a lot of tourney’s, placed in state. Had scholarship offers but didn’t want to continue.
If I was a football coach, I’d bring in wrestling coaches to teach basics of wrestling. I can always spot the wrestlers on the football field.

Hand fighting baby!
SMMA has whole lot of wrestlers and we still practice wrestling take-downs: “Hello pavement!” and other stuff; like hand fighting and pressure control.
I honestly feel a basic background in high school wrestling is more than enough self defense against the average, unknowing “DB.” College wrestling is another league of competency… Scary, strong dudes who can grind.
Come to an open mat sometime on Saturday’s 11-1pm. You’ll see some solid grapplers for sure. Bring your mat shoes too!
