I retract my prior statement about Colorado. That’s why I’m not a paid talking head on the ESPN Game Day broadcasts.
Yeah, they showed their mettle in this one.
They did show their mettle, but the fans rushing the field after beating an 0-1 CSU team? And earlier in the day I was thinking Missouri fans rushing the field after beating #17 KSU was bad.
College football fans. Who can understand them?
I can understand it. It was a rivalry game, they almost had an embarrassing upset, and there was an exciting finish. IMO, it’s not as much of an eyeroll moment as the time BYU fans rushed the field after beating Utah State at home in Provo.
[Edit: That said, after this game CU doesn’t seem quite as unstoppable as Sanders wanted them to seem.]
I still think the hype train left the station because it’s full of money, not because we know there’s something to hype.
Anyone who thinks Sanders does anything for any reason other than putting money in his pocket has not payed attention to his career.
I honestly don’t think we have any clue what CU is made of but we’ll find out next week, and they’re going to have to do it without Hunter.
I’m having a hard time remembering when a college (or NFL) coach was successful over a season by allowing themselves to become the center of attention like that, let alone in Year 1.
All the celebrities, the $500 price of tickets, the gushing from the broadcasters, the media spectacle. Is that all sustainable? “Thar’s Bitcoin in Boulder!”
CSU took away some of Prime’s mojo. From the pre-game rumble to 200 yards in penalties to 2 OTs. The Rams got the moral victory, and Prime’s rocket may not achieve orbit. The Buffs have a hangover and travel to Eugene on Friday.
It’s much harder to win when you’re the champs, when everyone is giving you their best shot. But to put a giant target on your team’s back by allowing your persona to eclipse the whole team… in your first year?
It’s unclear exactly how good the Buffs are, but they’re going to need 200 scholarships to get through the grinder Deion setup for them.
Damn. Fell asleep before it ended last night, and was really hoping to wake up this morning to a CSU win.
This. I couldn’t stand him as an arrogant, self-absorbed, showboating player: Doubly so now that he’s an arrogant, self-absorbed, showboating coach.
Maybe I’ll be proven wrong and Deion proves to be the next coming of Bear Bryant, but I still suspect CU comes back to earth as teams get film on them and they run into depth issues. We’ll see.
And ASU and Stanford…yikes. Although I do admit I chuckled a little to see Troy Taylor get whomped by his old team. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
RoJo was talking about this 120 snaps a game pace.
“When I played we had 50 or 60 or 70 snaps on defense (if we were not playing good). I was feeling it toward the end of the game, and definitely felt it afterward. I don’t know how he keeps this up.”
To this point, it’s the head coaches job to protect his players. What I’ve seen with Hunter was the exact opposite.
I stayed up to the bitter end hoping for CSU to win. I admire the Rams’ pluck. They fought hard and well. As for Deion, he’s very good at saying and doing outrageous things, adopting a flamboyant persona, and so forth. The media love it. Being an outrageous narcissist works as well in big-time sports as we’ve seen it work in national politics. But sooner or later there has to be some “there” there.
The Rams - a perennial “also played” team; a team that is not projected to contend for the MWC championship; a team that may not get six wins this season, takes the Buffs to 2OT. Had it not been for the 200 yards of penalties (and yes CSU committed them at killing points), there would be no joy in Boulder this morning.
The Buffs do have an offense; and just like the Jim Fassel Utes of the late 1980’s, the offense is potent. Then again, just like the Jim Fassel Utes for the late 1980’s, that defense sucks like a Fujita 5 tornado. In looking at who they have left on the schedule, they may be lucky to find 3 more wins. I don’t see any conference game where they’re going to be gifted 200 penalty yards, and most have offenses that have the ability to score and take time off the clock doing it.
Yes, Colorado’s offense will keep them in games, but in the end the defense will thwart their success.
@Ma-ake is right, these guys are Bitcoin right now; and just like Bitcoin, the Bubble is going to burst and the Buffs will come back to earth. It will be interesting to see what “Not Ready for Prime Time” does when the losses start coming. My guess is the next offseason will see another massive turnover of players to the portal.
Perhaps, this has already been posted. I apologize if that is the case.
ESPN’s Top 40 2024 recruiting rankings do not include Utah.
Massey projects a win vStanford and close contests against the two Arizona schools.
We typically don’t show up here at this point of the recruiting cycle. We usually don’t break in until October when most of the kids commit.
It will be interesting. Deion is a very smart, hard working guy. What he’s done is really unorthodox and I assume he knows it’s unsustainable, this year.
The number 1 rule of marketing is to not overhype a bad product, and though the Buffs have over performed expectations and are drawing a ton of eyeballs, what happens if/when they start to drop games in conference? I assume he’ll recruit well for next year, but the overhype could start to become a serious liability.
This reminds me a little of Muhammad Ali, who was a master showman and a great athlete who knew how to create massive paydays, whether people liked him or not. The big problem with the comparison is there are 12 FB games in 3 and a half months instead of one enormous match every 12-18 months.
I think Deion is capturing lightning in a bottle here. The longer he can win and draw attention the greater shot he has at NIL $ and recruits. Let’s face it, the B12 is not stacked with powerhouse programs. Yes there are a lot of quality second-tier programs but there is a clear opportunity to dominate if a program can collect elite recruits.
Further, elite recruits makes the coaching much easier. Anyone who has ever coached knows this- the first step is get the best players and then you can look smart.
Deion does not have to win the P12 this year. People will see the enormous progress the program has made from P12 doormat to B12 bully.
The circus will sell to recruits- particularly when combined with substantial NIL $.
Much like Urban Meyer when he was at Utah, Deion is someone who can generate instant success and energy, but everything he does is to advance himself. Utah got lucky and had a stabilizing force like Whit come in right after Urban, but I worry that when (not if) Deion decides to jump that he’ll simply take all of that momentum with him to wherever he goes next and CU will regress back to what they’ve been pre-Deion.
Time will tell, I suppose.
Yeah, time will tell. But Colorado may get lucky and get a coach like Whitt who can build off of whatever Deion leaves behind when he inevitably leaves. As @Uteanooga said, Deion seems to have captured lightning in a bottle. Although I suspect he won’t sustain it this season. The PAC looks too deep for him to keep it up. Next season in the Big 12? Maybe he will be able to do so. We’ll see.
This off-season will be interesting to watch. My guess, Sanders dumps half his roster again, which will undo a lot of that momentum.
The circus is a two way street. For every kid tag wants it you’re going to have one who Sanders lets get eaten by the lions.
I think Deion’s tactics will come to haunt him and the Colorado Primes during the course of the season. Other teams would like nothing more than to show them up on the field. We saw that last night from CSU, they brought the heat.
It doesn’t help when Prime Jr. Is interviewed after the game wearing sunglasses, a cap with a $ sign on it, and showing off his rolex watch. Who wouldn’t want to knock that kid’s head off.
