I think he’s got until October before the grumbling starts, if they aren’t beating teams by 50 points.
And to be fair, it’s some subset of the fanbase. There are lots of reasonable Buckeye fans, but there is those who will be loud in their dissatisfaction, A microcosm of society.
We had an IT guy here in Utah leave for a position, also in Utah, just running the systems for a horse racing investment firm. Lots of money, but lots of boredom, so he came back.
Believe it or not he’s not the reason. There are some major billionaires in Louisville and you have to remember there are ZERO Big three Pro Teams in Kentucky for them to invest/market with. It’s sort of weird to outsiders that they don’t invest in UK but Louisville being the largest metro and where many of them are based it sort of comes together. You add an NBA team or Baseball and that may slow down.
No it’s Alcohol money, Restaurant Money, Coal Money, Hospital, and Fossil Fuel money. The horses barely move the needle.
The scary secret in Louisville right now… the city is starting to crater and much of the money around town is drying up.
Only been there once, but visited the Louisville slugger plant, zip-lined underground, and got a Hot Brown. Seemed like an underrated city. Sad if it’s declining.
We drove through, lots of construction going on. Bridge over Ohio River was being worked on. Seemed, at least superficially, vibrant at the time. Granted we were just passing through town.
Those bridges needed replacement in a big way. I was starting to worry the stuff I get from that area via the airport in Covington was going to get cut off due to a bridge collapse.
A once great city has been pilaged with Conservative (both of Blue Dog Dem and Mitch McConnell Republican) Corruption. The Bridge issue is SERIOUS. I don’t even like going there anymore. Sometimes I have to be in the city and will wander over to the Muhammed Ali Museum. UofL however makes great strides and then loses gains over mismanagement. It’s really sad to see stuff that can be cool be destroyed by Oligarchs of a local variety.
When do we hit the “Division I athletics and NIL investment is a net negative to the University” stage of this? I know some schools (Like Alabama) see gains through athletics. That said, some schools are great academic schools that don’t need this marketing arm of the institution. I know WKU my hometown school went from FCS to FBS and went all in on athletics and NIL. In the 1990s it was a Top 200 National University but has fallen past 300.
Fair question to ask. My guess is some will hit that point in the next 5 or so years. As to which schools? I don’t know, except they’ll be on the fringe of athletic success or worse.
I am looking at schools now with my kid. To be fair places like Vanderbilt really could give a about sports like most FBS P4 schools. They don’t even run athletics like most. Vanderbilt’s athletic programs are part of the Office of Student Athletics, Recreation, and Wellness.
