D-I College football thread, non-Utah edition

I’ve seen enough of your posts to know, you’re always apologizing for the SEC.

I"ll leave it at that.

I think you infer what you want from my posts and think I am the avatar for the SEC.

I’ll leave it at that.

Well it looks to be like this for the 8 teams in the quarterfinals…

3 - B1G (tOSU, Penn St, Oregon)
2 - SEC (Texas, Georgia)
1 - BIG 12 (ASU)
1 - Indy (Notre Dame)
1 - G5 (Boise State)

Just remember folks, the ghost of the PAC 12 has 2 teams here. It’s too bad they couldn’t figure out a way to keep things together.

Oh, and screw FOX and Disney.

Saw this on Facebook. It made me laugh.

SEC logic:

Indiana lost to Notre Dame by 10 points, and were outgained by 116 yards. Clearly they didn’t belong.

SMU lost to Penn State by 28 points, and were outgained by 72 yards. Clearly they didn’t belong.

Clemson lost to Texas by 14 points, and were outgained by 82 yards. Clearly they didn’t belong.

Tennessee lost to Ohio State by 25 points, and were outgained by 217 yards. Clearly the SEC is the best conference with superior teams, and Tennessee had a bad day.

My prediction for final 4

tOSU/PSU/UGA/UT

Not my desired outcome just my prediction.

In looking at the bracket as it stands now, the committee I think got the right teams in, they just mis-seeded the whole thing.

I think many in the SEC would argue neither Texas nor Tennessee were the top 3. Just the most fortunate in terms of schedule. Also, I get everyone hating on the SEC. That said, when you consider roster talent 14 of the top 30 are SEC squads and it also reflects in the NFL draft. Two things can be true. The SEC can be the most talented and deep conference and their fans can be dumb and overhype them.

For context Big 1G have 8 of the top 30 in talent teams, ACC has 5, Big 12 has 2 and then there is ND. No other conference has Top 30 roster.

This is spot on. I don’t think the 12 seed, SMU or even Tennessee was a great selection. But, I also think having 4 conf champs bye is a bad move.

Read to the end. Many of us old guard are disassociating from the mess but the professor sums it up. Enough people don’t care that as long as the money rolls in the rest is just brainless tribal entertainment that the masses will consume (my summary).

Spin it all off entirely away from the colleges. It’s a job and nothing else. Nothing to do with education at this point.

The spin-off may be coming sooner than anyone could’ve expected…

So are you watching 1-AA ball? How about HS? In reality it has always been brainless tribal entertainment for the masses since the invention of the television. It’s why I was all for it early in life but as the money was made and more options for travel and entertainment opened up to me I really have less connection. My friends who played college sports all said it was enslavement because your degree possibilities were limited and it was basically an unpaid job with no health coverage long term.

That said, you will see me every New Years Day at the Rose Bowl. It gives that feeling so many of us are romantic for but seems to lack overall now days.

I’m not an Utah fan because of some weird affinity to it being an “amateur sport”. I’m an Utah fan and watch Utah football because I have a connection to that school specifically through family and community.

Why would I watch some random 1-AA or high school teams I have no connection with whatsoever? No to mention the quality of the games and talent of the players that steadily decreases the lower level you go.

Ibid.

Glad you were only speaking for yourself, but some people just like to watch football regardless. I watched a fair amount of two games in the 1-AA playoffs and enjoyed what I was able to watch.

I’m definitely glad that people enjoy the other divisions (and would never attempt to speak for anyone other than myself  ).

I just don’t really buy into the argument that watching the Bumblef*ck Donkeys take on the North Clackalacky Goatherders in the DIII-A Subclass 6 semifinals somehow has an equivalent level of engagement and enthusiasm among college football fans as Utah vs USC at Rice Eccles.

I watch little League all the way up to and including the NFL.

My preference is college football, regardless of the division.

In my free time, I hang out at HPER watching the purest form of basketball.

I don’t think I was even replying to you. The good news is you have a connection to Utah and are close to campus right? They have intramurals that are for pure love of the game. You should go check it out.

Two things. USC is South Carolina and SC is Southern Cal. Secondly, I fight people daily (outside of here) saying Utah is elite. Most still put y’all as the Southern Miss of the West. This $ grab is why expansion happened and you were invited into the Pac 12. Don’t be so high and mighty about Montana, Montana State, Mercer, HBCU schools etc

Based on this, it couldn’t be more clear that there’s tremendous value in the second tier “autonomy” schools - that it makes no economic sense to have a hard split off.

Roughly 2 x big xii teams = 1 blue blood. I thought the drop off would be much greater.

Wat.

Thanks, I guess? Your sacrifice will be noted in the annals of Utah football history.

I’m not being “high and mighty” about anything, nor am I saying football at the lower divisions can’t be fun or have good games. I’m sure they do.

I’m simply saying that the vast majority of football fans have a particular school that they cheer for because they have a connection to them (alumni, proximity, family, etc.). Telling people who are frustrated about college football crumbling before their eyes that they can just go watch Montana State instead for a comparable experience seems silly to me, but ymmv.

I’m not saying that tecnically you’re wrong, but no one in our part of the country ( Mountain or Pacific time zone) thinks of South Carolina when you mention USC.

I’d argue that 90% of the country thinks Southern Cal when you say USC.
