Yeah he can sell that plan, but I wouldnāt buy it.
Utah has curb appeal as a winning program. Adding Utah would give Washington, Oregon, U$C, and UCLA another regional program to schedule - avoiding more Hawaii like trips to play games. Though the Salt Lake media market is small, it is growing; and academically it matches well in the B1G.
That noted, in the end itās all about eyeballs watching games in this brave, transparent new professional period in college athletics; and in short we donāt have them in the here and now. Itās the same reason we havenāt seen the MLB and NFL come here. Though TCU is a metroplex team, thatās still a Texas market and they arenāt Texas. They also signed the Loyalty Oath, something we didnāt do.
Without more of a discussion and an overall plan for how player payment is handled and capped, this whole thing will come off the rails.
Itās nice to think about the next chapter, but there are a ton of moving parts in play that need consideration before the next realignment happens or we will all be watching the most expensive bankruptcy in the history of sports.

Seriously, though, after winning four games last season, I wouldnāt be at all surprised to see them stay at four or regress, even in a much weaker league.

Heās right. It is a P2 World that everyone else is āliving inā for now, but not for much longer. I would say the only concession that should be made would be a bifurcation of the other sports away from football, and a series of divisions created in football similar to what soccer has in the rest of the world with a promotion/relegation system created to keep things more competitive (or to avoid seeing teams like Vandy and Rutgers rolling as doormats and getting paid to do it).
But the status quo is beyond ridiculous right now; and if it keeps going the way it is, we will see their golden goose get shot.
