I hadn’t really thought about this. They obviously beat us in 2019 37-15 (we were #5, them #13) so this year was great payback - knock them out of CFP consideration and drop them to the Alamo bowl. 2020 they filled in for UW who had Covid issues and at 3-2, beat a #13 5-0 USC.
Also interesting to remember how USC wanted to get rid of Clay after mediocrity but with a 5-0 season in a bizarro world, they couldn’t. That’s why they had to pick a point (even if during the season) that he looked bad.
I had honestly completely forgotten that they actually played a CCG last year. I (along with most everyone else, I assume) pretty much just tuned out that weird season.
Did the COVID year CCG actually count as an “official” conference title for Oregon?
Yes, it’s official, but totally weird since they were #2 in the North but played since UW had covid issues (not the first time - see 7-2 USC in 2011 that was ineligible so UCLA [5-4] went and lost to … #8 Oregon). And they WON being the #2 at 3-2 over 5-0 USC, which I don’t know if I like or dislike.
We are 1-2 in the CCG, as is USC. Oregon 4-1, Stanford 3-1 (I just believe they can’t keep up in the new age of college football), UW 2-0, UCLA 0-2, UA/ASU/CU 0-1. WSU and Oregon St. have never played in the CCG in the 11 years it’s been held.
This was a good showing and good to help in future TV deal negotiations but the Big12 had an even better weekend. Considering the participants, Baylor, OK St., Cinci, and Houston are future Big12 members, they will use this data point to not lose as mich with the departures of UT and OU.
In general though, the numbers seem to align with the combined rankings of the participants.
