I wasn’t sure where to drop this. Yes it’s football, but not in a direct way, at least not yet.
I came across this via r/cfb. I thought the concept was at least interesting. I’m not sure how far it will fly, especially in light of the proposed football scheduling thing between the Big 10 and the SEC.
Anyway, the gist is that all 136 current (if I read correctly) members of the FBS get place in a mostly regional level of playing. The “big” schools, currently what has been known as the Power 5, plus a few additions (approx 72 schools or so) get a vast majority of the money. The remaining 64 or so get the crumbs. Not too different that today. But the genesis is that we go back to more regional and historical rivals, thus limiting a majority of the travel issues. At the same time it supposed to set up it’s supposed to encourage more competitive match ups across the board. I don’t see how that can be enforced as of now.
The article is long on ideas, short on specifics. It is worth the read, at least for a thought experiment.
My thoughts: as far who is behind the proposal - at this point it seems like basically one notch above fan fiction.
As Ma’ake discussed, it’s only likely to happen with congressional intervention.
From the article: there would be possible promotion but no relegation.
Like I said, it makes for a good and entertaining thought experiment. I don’t see it going forward.

The people behind it (a lot of Big XII and ACC folks)
It’s kind of interesting. The divisional compactness is generally there.
Trying to get revenue sharing with parity…not going to happen.

I don’t think so either. My reasoning is a bit more prosaic I suppose. The BIG and SEC won’t let it happen.

This is correct as of now. If both ESPN and Fox (and it would have to be both) were on board and they see a guarantee of more dollars for them, then all the hurdles we see now will suddenly melt away. That is for certain not a sure thing, but if the idea were to happen, two things would have to exist: (1) ESPN and Fox want it; and (2) it would have to include relegation, and not just promotion.
