An apt summary of the Pac12's media situation

They got their numbers, some needed approval of their board of trustees. We know Taylor Randall and Harlan are always quiet about these things, so expecting anything leaked from them one way or the other is unlikely.

When it comes to the Arizona schools, I would be more worried if the State Board of Regents was meeting because they may need their approval if they were going to jump ship, and have to go as a pair. Like I have always said, there is talking, and there is “talking seriously.”

There’s been turnover at the president and AD levels in the PAC, but I see two major factors, if it ends up roughly similar to the B12 deal:

  • CU seems to have lied to the rest of the PAC in how close they were to leaving…or maybe they just wanted a change of scenery. Landing is right, and the second seems plausible.

  • The PAC seemed tone deaf at how concerned their fans got. Not good. Maybe with the evolving media landscape it took longer to sculpt a deal, maybe the Hollywood situation made a positive difference late, but time and sabotage was not on the PAC’s side against a meat-eater who wanted to smoke out some dinner.

  • Even if the P9 sticks together for the next 5 years, this will be a case study in applying pressure from the outside. The CEO group never appeared to notice… or maybe there’s more to the story.

This entire saga has been a nauseating sign of the future. If these tactics are the new normal this is almost as bad as NIL.

i saw somewhere that the next regularly scheduled meeting of the Utah Board of Trustees or whatever it is called, is August 8.

I also read that the UA football coach spoke with the parents of his players regarding the PAC 12/ Big 12 and told them that “something would happen soon.”

The most logical explanation I’ve seen is that some mega donors - as in, folks with their names on buildings - who wanted them to stay in B12 all along, drove that decision. Why would they panic now all of a sudden after all this time? Or if it was about the deal… why only them?

If Thamel has solid info - a source in the room - this is another bad look.

The governance model is ill equipped to deal with sharks and media worms.

If Thamel is just “reporting” there was a big meeting and related rumors are flying around, I’m less concerned.

I had the same thought. Then it hit me that bad numbers would be very likely to leak. So I have no idea.

What did I miss?

Oh, as usual, nothing.

There’s always FOIA, due to the number of public schools. I have no clue how long a FOIA request takes, just tossing it out there as an alternative way to get info.

Seems that this whole thing is a slow motion train wreck. As @Ma-ake stated earlier the PAC leaders/CEO group seem to be tone deaf (at best IMO), or oblivious to their fans and alumni.

I think good info news would have been hinted at somewhere by someone. As it sits, it looks like the CEO group is attempting to find a way to sugar coat less than ideal news, hence the delay and “another meeting.”

The PAC era for them has been imminently forgettable. 2 winning seasons, zero bowl wins, three or four coaches (counting interims).

The academics and alumni like the PAC. Boosters and excited fans want a new era. Colorado is really an intersection state. I’m sure Yormark’s consultants researched this well.

If it’s true there are options to consider, that could be a reason. 9 headed monster seeking consensus (or unanimity) equals s…l…o…w…

Yormark was given a long leash to see what he could do. The PAC was trying to defend their complicated turf. UW and OU want to follow the LA schools, etc.

Is the fat lady getting out of her limo? Seems that way.

I think part of my gripe, now that it has been shown to be Apple TV+, is that I don’t want another subscription. I especially don’t want one that is not compatible with my current tech. I don’t want to get a new TV, the one I have works just fine, I don’t want a new piece of equipment to watch on said TV.

If this had been Prime, or Paramount+ I’d be less grumpy.

I do agree that it looks like the fat lady is getting out of her limo.

I think poor numbers are far more likely to be leaked.

Schools would be quick to scoff at such numbers and torpedo any chances by leaking the numbers.

A good number is likely to be held close to ensure there are no issues and it can be ratified.

In my PR experience it’s much more difficult to keep bad news quiet as pissed off people want to vent

If your devices can get Prime or Paramount they likely get Apple TV too, it’s app is available on most everything

Except the Play Store, more google/apple nonsense, or at least not for my Pixel phone. Just checked.

See, I’d like Apple TV+ (cheapest subscription I have) rather than Paramount+. With Prime, Hulu/Disney, Apple, and (current) access to Netflix, it is getting to much though to a la carte all these different subscriptions.

To side track a touch. We do like Paramount+ for the Star Trek stuff, and they do have some pretty good movies, and sometimes NFL games since we’re in a dead spot for HD over the air broadcasts.

Same. For years, I have been very adamant about refusing to subscribe to yet another streaming service. We have Netflix (mostly for the anime) and Amazon (mostly for the free shipping), and I grudgingly subbed to Disney+ this year (mostly for the Star Wars). Adding another sub - one that have absolutely zero interest in anything outside of potential football games - doesn’t appeal to me one bit.

On the other hand, maybe I could downgrade my Comcast (since I won’t need it for P12 network) and actually save some fairly significant $$ in the process.

Still, all of these are logistics that I don’t really want to have to think about just to watch a damn football game.

the great thing about Apple is that they have more money than god. You cant beat the quality of their streaming service and their products. And its built for younger generations.

Its scary to me because Im in the 45+ range and grew up on broadcast tv sports on a large tv screen, but that isn’t how younger generations consume media or sports any longer.

I could see this being a painful start, but a bright future.
