The White Sox win their first playoff series since the amazing 11-1 postseason and World Series win in 2005. I have to admit that after so many years of suckage, including a then-record of losses in a regular season two years ago, I choked up a little at that final strikeout pitch last night.
This is a good, young team. I think they can take Cleveland, but that’s likely the end of the road. It’s nice not to have to ignore the standings after April again.
Somewhere in the 80s or 90s, we were having a family reunion, my parents had recently got cable TV, Carlin had a gig on HBO (I think).
Anyway, my cousins were gathering around the couch pit as I clicked on Carlin, thinking this would be maybe a little edgy and offbeat, based on all of his stuff I’d heard on records.
Right off the bat: “Why is it that the people who are opposed to abortion are the same people you wouldn’t want to f### in the first place!?!?”
I never found the remote as quickly, before or since. Fortunately, the parents and aunts and uncles didn’t catch any of it.
I completely agree. My life long favorite memories of Carlin are from the LPs he released in the very late 60’s, 70’s, and early 80s.
I recall being sort of astounded at how foul his act had become sometime in the late 80’s or 90’s when I was traveling for work and one late evening watching HBO (which I never subscribed to) in a hotel room.
But then, by that time I was also equally disturbed by most other comedians who were seemingly all looking for the same sort of shock-based comedy response.
My parent’s had his first album. I remember the Hippy-Dippy weatherman bit
“Weather forecast for tonight: dark. Continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning.”
I doubt the fan who reached over the wall last night is going to be invited into the Yankees dugout to hang out with the team like a certain young fan was 30 years ago.
If you had told me the Padres big 4 of Tatis, Manny, Merrill and France would hit 13 for 61 (.213) with 1 HR, that Miller would give up 2 runs in the 9th to lose and that a potential game winning HR would become an out because of a roof beam I would not have believed it.
That was nutz. Tropicana? OK, sure. The Rays are a really good team playing in a circus tent that is prone to being taken out by a hurricane.
But the #1 seed has that kind of bizarre ground rule interference provision in a stadium that is relatively new? And it came into play in the playoffs?
Just watching the start of the Cleveland-Chicago game. There is nothing like being in the ballpark for playoff baseball, being on the edge of your seat for every at bat. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend it. Like no other sporting event.
I remember that one. The weatherman’s name was Al Sleet. I was in high school still at the time, and the local weathermen in Salt Lake were Bob Welti and Mark Eubank. Something about those two guys made Al Sleet even funnier than he would’ve been without them.
