AI and the new frontier

I was perusing KSL news and I always take a peek at the comments. Some astute poster noticed the headline article was a duplicate of an event that happened 5 years ago! Apparently AI “saw” a tribute posting and developed an article about a tragic truck crash fatality on I-80. Strange times indeed.

Maybe there needs to be a discussion (or a million discussions) about just how much automation we need in our lives.

Oh, and this certainly explains why Tommy Chong gets reported as being dead when he’s not.

If you don’t subscribe to Wired Magazine…do yourself a favor and start reading it. It’s truly doing its best to stay on the front line of not just the AI tech but also the social and political aspects of it all.

And just as major AI developers are raising the danger flag about rogue AI agents, the man in the White House calls it a hoax and the speaker of the House calls yet another recess. These are the people responsible for the welfare of our country?

So there are completely AI ‘news’ websites out there.

We’ve seen them completely fabricate names and quotes, my agency has been in some of them, featuring quotes from people who don’t exist.

In this case it looks like someone at KSL’s news desk didn’t realize the story was a AI fake, and ran with it. KSL itself didn’t use AI, it appears, but rather didn’t actually verify the source themselves.

It seems to me that maybe there should be an immediate pause in AI development or implementation while everyone can catch their breath and get a handle on what needs to be done. I’m not a tech guy so I don’t know the feasibility of that approach. I’m just wary of quick congressional action to solve complex problems.

I say this as someone that is approaching my golden years, i don’t think many of the relics in elected office have the capacity to grasp this situation nor the inclination to listen to experts.

The silver lining in some of the high profile AI incidents - like OpenAI’s test model breaking out of its sandbox to attack the company Hugging Face - is there is widespread cognizance of the how significant the risks are. Related, increasing agreement of how incoherent the AI bubble is. The data center rush is getting pretty widespread pushback.

The developers at OpenAI were out of their minds to build and test such a model… and now everyone knows it.

I hope Hugging Face sues OpenAI for $500B. That would send a message.

All the more reason to not trust them to rush into action. One Big Beautiful Bill is enough of that.

Anyone read Shoshana Zubroff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism

It seems like it might be worth a read.

Won’t happen because there is a metric sh*t-ton of money to be made.

The tech moguls have proven again and again that they’re more than happy to burn everything to the ground if it allows them to gain slightly more market share than the others.

If you want something incredibly unsettling, Google Peter Theil’s (founder of Palantir, who now owns billions in federal surveillance contracts) responses when asked if the human race should survive.

Every one of the big AI techbros is a complete sociopath.

Want a real fun development? Spend a few minutes chewing on the implications here.

Kalshi collects usage behavior, device information, location inferred from IP addresses, cookies and tracking information; may combine information it collects with information obtained from third parties; and uses information for marketing, analysis, personalization and business insights. Its policy also says it participates in interest-based advertising, permits advertising networks and social-media companies to collect information about people’s use of Kalshi, and may share identifiers such as hashed email addresses or
user IDs to recognize people across devices.

What this functionality means is that they can both collect and then analyze behavioral analytics at a level that should stagger the mind to individualize and target those who are most likely to compulsively gamble….and not only use that to essentially amplify additional marketing to the most vulnerable knowingly, but also package and sell this info to anyone they want.

Fun times.

Peter Thiel should scare the crap out of everybody. Read some of his views on the anti-Christ. And the fact that he is so influential in the administration and they are easily manipulated I believe is a bigger threat than any foreign government.

Worth noting that he deems the “anti-Christ” to be people like Greta Thunberg or anyone who dares try to regulate AI.

He’s doing a US lecture tour as we speak. My brother got a flyer for one in Nashville a few weeks ago. Thiel is a complete and utter lunatic with an extraordinary amount of power.

This is an interview with Andrew Yang. It’s about 10 minutes long. They discuss what happened with the recent runaway AI agents as well as some things that remain a danger on the internet after they were contained.

I know a number of smart people who think the whole dooomsday thing is actually that the AI companies are finding that they are reaching the capacity of what AI can do, or that its development is slowing. This is a smokescreen for investors, hence all of the AI companies suddenly saying, “Wait, we need someone to regulate us.” They want someone to blame for the slowdown.

And the Hugging Face attack, they didn’t just ‘somehow’ get out of their sandbox. They were let out in what is likey a PR stunt.

The truth is, AI is crippled on the fact that it is a reflection of humans. Its math and math can only do so many things. I use AI all day every day, and I am not afraid of it or what it may become. If it does go bad, it will be intentional.

I’d caution against thinking of AI as hobbled because it’s created by humans. I mean it was born of us. But like a virus in a lab…it can easily evolve and grow beyond our ability to deal with. Did we give it a flaw d data set to start life with? Oh yeah that’s certain and I agree with you 100% there but it’s evolving beyond its birth.

Recursive self improvement is a real game
Changer and while Anthropic was at 0% of its development at the end of 2025, its own AI is now contributing 25% of the code. This is a game changer. Even if the hype around is is off by 2x it’s still incredible.

Read up on Humanities final exam or the AI 2027 paper or the Stanford Annual AI Index.

This isn’t a stagnant or flat lined tech. Do they use PR? Sure.
But I doubt the growth number of jailbreaks are all deliberate or staged. We have a pretty well documented history now of AI acting in ways we were apparently too dumb to anticipate :grimacing:
