Thoughts? https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/50198507/espn-lands-handshake-agreement-air-24-team-cfp
What I find most interesting is the potential elimination of conference championship games…not good or bad just interesting. Also handshake deal? Will it have legs or will it fall apart?
Key Details of the Proposed 24-Team Format
-
Field Composition:
- 4 automatic bids for the Power 4 conference champions
- 1 automatic bid for the highest-ranked Group of 6 team
- 19 at-large
-
Bracket Structure:
- The top 8 teams receive a bye to the second round.
- Seeds 9 through 24 play in a first round on campus sites (e.g., No. 9 hosts No. 24, No. 10 hosts No. 23).
- The second round features first-round winners facing seeds 1–8, also hosted on campus.
- Quarterfinals and semifinals continue to rotate through traditional New Year’s Six bowl games.
-
Schedule & Changes:
- Expected to eliminate Power 4 conference championship games.
- The regular season would start a week earlier and conclude around Thanksgiving weekend.
- Financial terms reportedly involve ESPN paying roughly $345 million more per year.
-
Approval Status: While a handshake agreement is in place, final formal board approval across all conferences and stakeholders is still pending
