2025 Las Vegas Bowl Game Thread - Utah vs Nebraska - Scalley Era Begins

Ah, ok. My memory was wrong. I’m a year off. So, Morgan has a year to worry about beating the faux U.

I’m ok with the Utes beating up barbarians, pigs, and cows. Although Idaho game should just be replaced with a G5+ school IMO.

A couple of thoughts here. First off I totally forgot about those old band uniforms, that were around forever and a day. They ended up getting replaced not too many years after because of the success of the team and going to big time bowls. I even remember when the band ended up marching in the inauguration parade for obama.

I also find it hilarious that the YouTube video is labeled as the Independence bowl when the logo and the field very clearly says Liberty bowl.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about the Obama parade, and even if the Utes were one of the few later invitations, it’s wonderful to think that it came about as a result of our monumental showing in that Sugar Bowl.

As for the uniforms, If those were the ones they were wearing when they performed at the Sugar Bowl, then they would have been wearing them when they sang the Chocolate Milk Song, in what I remember as one of the breaks in the action which did not go to a commercial.

I looked back in my digital video of games but could not find it :frowning:

I have not enjoyed a game that much for quite a while! We will see a few things shake out over the next month or so. I really hope Beck stays, but I’m not optimistic. I think Dampier will stay (especially if Beck stays). I don’t think Dampier is really going to play quarterback at Michigan

I wonder if I’m alone in this: In the Las Vegas Bowl I saw a little different edge to the team than we usually saw under KW. The aggressiveness on offense felt different. To a lesser extent, so did the defensive aggressiveness, although not as much. Anyone else feel that way?

p.s. Happy New Year!

I saw the usual slow start in the 1st quarter. What I sensed was a calmness and a confidence emerging in the 2nd quarter that I hadn’t seen before. Especially from Dampier in the throw game. They were comfortably aggressive, not erratic. The offense didn’t have to depend on the run. So fun to watch.

I hope the personnel are taking this smooth and consistent play into consideration when contemplating their options about the portal in the next few days.

I saw a team that was more loose and confident.

Dampier’s quote after the game was telling to me

“He just lifted us up from the jump. Throughout this trip, he’s allowed us to have both the fun of enjoying each other - there’s a lot of love for this team that we’ve created, we’ve bonded since beginning, so just for him to allow us to have that time together - and then also when we got to business, man, we hit it hard. Practices were hard. Just grateful for it all, grateful for Coach Scalley, the way he handled everything, and that’s kind of what kept us together.”

I think this is where Kyle has possibly had the game pass him by a bit

Between the statements from Weddle, Zach Moss etc about the lack of alumni engagement to this.

Kyle isn’t a people person.

Morgan is.

And that can matter.

Throughout the game I couldn’t stop thinking about when the Utes played Nebraska in the past (mainly as a body bag game to get a big paycheck). I couldn’t remember the details so I looked it up.

Date Winner Score Loser Location
Sep 13, 1980 Nebraska 55-9 Utah Lincoln, NE
Sep 16, 1989 Nebraska 42-30 Utah Lincoln, NE

Both of these during my time as a student (1980 Freshman and 1989 young guy early in a career). I remember the 1989 game where Scott Mitchell and Bryan Rowley teamed up to keep the game from being a runaway.

Back in 1989, I would never have believed anyone that said that the Utes would play Nebraska again and beat them by 22 points. Things have really flipped.

Then there was the 1992 game. It was 21-0 Nebraska after one quarter and 35-0 at halftime and 49-7 midway through the fourth. I remember feeling pretty happy that Utah added two scores and put up 22 points.

I also want to note, there’s a quote floating from Dampier that’s insinuating this was his last couple hours with the team.

The actual answer was about the seniors, not the team. It’s being used out of context.

He seemed to say “I’ll be in Red” next year to the aftergame reporter

He said he looks good in red and then showed his bling circle and feather.
