Much better ball handling and fundamentals tonight, Congrats
Utes
Yeah, my expectations remain modest. Love our guards, but they’re small. TB is a talent, but hasn’t really been a PG, same with McHenry. They can create, but they’re both scorers first. It’s going to be a wall when we go against bigger guards, so other options need to emerge.
Dawes has a lot more upside he needs to consistently show. Hayes is slight but long and athletic, so he’ll get blown off the blocks. He’s solid on FTs, though. Sanders is just a FR, but he’s a pretty consistent in the corners and scraps on D and rebounding.
Room for other guys to find their niche, Traore, Abbey. Patrick is a 6’6 3 pt threat who seems to know the game and his own limitations.
As long as they keep, developing and scrapping, this will be easy team to support, see if they can avoid the Big-12 cellar.
The Utes eked out a nice win last night.
(I’m posting from the Deseret news because I don’t subscribe to the Tribune anymore. I got sick of paying for everything I want to see online.)
Starting Jan 1 you won’t have to.
Hope so, 'splain more if you can. I’ve been a long time Trib subscriber, but seems like they’re constantly asking for money and aren’t particularly sophisticated online.
DN has a lot more resources (obviously) and easily engaging in online commentary has been interesting and sometimes stimulating, but it’s becoming more toxic.
The DN seems to be taking more of a turn toward reinforcing affiliated church entities (BYU) and moralizing, in the process looking more & more like an upscale ward newsletter… all the reasons I preferred the Trib historically.
Last week the Trib announced their content will be free because they met a fundraising goal. I know we’ll keep our subscription because we think they’re worth paying for, but reading and sharing their content will be much easier.
Apologies for driving off in the weeds here on the Hoops thread, but the history of the DN & the Trib is fascinating.
- Brother Brigham had a vision for the grand state of Deseret, the newsletter was formed accordingly.
- The US barfed on the State of Deseret idea in 1850 and said it will be known as Utah territory.
- The Trib arose as an alternative voice as more & more gentiles crashed the Salt Lake social scene, to the consternation of the prophet.
Fast forward 175 years and it’s still basically the same dynamic socially and politically, with some changes, of course, but definitely a rhyme.
Great! I’ll hurry back! I can’t stand the celebratory coverage* of BYU sports in the D news. I’d much rather read about sports in the Trib.
*In other words, the DNews sportswriters tend to prance a lot, just like the BYU football team.
Yep. As a committed, active LDS guy, I get enough of that information separately. As a result, I pass over a lot of material that appears in the Deseret News, and I do the same with some material in the Trib. When the Trib is available, I will probably never go to the Deseret new sports section unless there’s something interesting someone refers me to.
I am quite amused by Traore’s passing deficiency. You don’t have to be a good passer, but don’t be so bad. Like WBB, again, it’s as though they don’t understand passing angles and not to pass to the bigs at their feet.
Couldn’t watch the second half. Is it available anywhere?
Unexpected after last couple of losses to mediocre teams, but very pleasantly surprised. McHenry had a couple of great games out there. Brown struggled, but hit the 2 huge free throws in the last minute to help give us a fine win.
Yeah, it’s so bad it’s it stands out - every pass is an adventure. He’s going to have to get better because really good teams will apply pressure he’s never seen before… but that might open up some back cuts as the other team looks to feast on errant passes.
My son was similarly unimpressed with McHenry’s passing… until last night. Brown and McHenry are score-first guys who can break down most defensive pressure & can distribute off that first option. TB’s a likeable kid who you can see realizes he’s going to have to evolve his game, quickly. McHenry is a polished offensive player - if his shot is falling, he’s a real weapon.
I’m baffled the fan base expected a good team this year.
They’re struggling.
Bonneville laid off a lot of people a few weeks ago and essentially folded. Employees at other radio stations etc were told they now work for KSL.
The DNews transferred most of their actual reporters to KSL.com which is a separate entity.
I’ve subscribed to the Trib. $7.99 a month seems like a bargain to me and I will just keep the subscription to support the journalism.
It was lucky that there wasn’t an additional .5 seconds on the clock. That guy just went right by Abbey.
The audio is AI garbage, but this looks like every play in the game. (The channel seems to be from somewhere in SE Asia with some odd auto-dubbing on the audio. Interesting.)
Sorry for the slight deviation, but I noticed that Michigan beat 12th-ranked Gonzaga yesterday 101-61. Good heavens, when is the last time Gonzaga got pulverized by 40?

Thank you Ma-ake.
