2025-2026 Men's Basketball

They’re playing somebody called the Lopes.

Imgaine telling an older Ute fan like me 20–25 years ago that in late November 2025, Utah would be a 4.5-point underdog on a neutral court to Grand Canyon University. Heck, imagine saying that to Ute fans 10 years ago after Utah was coming off a Sweet 16 run.

Down by 5, 28-33, at the half.

Down by 8 with 13 minutes left in the 2nd half. Definitely a rebuilding year.

Make that a 10-pt loss.

Turnovers, missed throws (we had been fairly successful at the charity stripes last few games until last night), and a very rough outing from Brown kept us out of it. Thought McHenry and Okonkwo had decent outings, but others all seemed to struggle.

Lopes shot under 40% and went zero from the 3 point line (seemed both teams were unaware of the difference between the college and NBA lines as there were a lot of woefully short attempts from behind the NBA line), but that was enough to give them a double digit win.

GCU sent a large and very loud group of students to the tourney (commentators mentioned them going to Disneyland) along with their band, and it was more of a road game than what we would normally have at this type of game.

my bad, since it started at 12 pm on the East Coast CBS Sports had it showing as being played today, which is technically correct if you’re in the East

I know for Hawaii football games, sometimes it shows it at 11:59pm ET to keep it ‘that day’

That just brought back memories of listening to Utah-Hawaii games on the radio at 1 in the morning courtesy of Bill Marcroft.

And wondering the whole time what he was describing?

Utah was 11 of 18 from the line and GCU was 22 of 32. Points off turnovers GCU 17 Utah 000000.

“He’s to the 40, the 30, the 20, the 10…and taken down at the 27.”

Check it, the Utah 50.

Utah MBB and WBB have this in common – turnovers. You just look at them wrong and they’ll turn the ball over. haha

I heard a rumor that Alex was promised $7 million for NIL starting next season while only having $2 mil this year. Assuming this is true, how would you spend that money to try to attract the best talent? The roster limit is 15.

Players 13,14,15: Scholarship only - $0 - to whatever might remain
Players 10,11,12: $900k of total budget
Players 4,5,6,7,8,9: $2.5 mil of total budget
Players 1,2,3: $3.6 mil of total budget

Can you assemble a competitive roster with these numbers? I read an article indicating

Utes vs Ole Miss late tonight, up 8 at the half.

Best half of the season, so far. McHenry with 19 at the half, Sanders has looked good, too. Brown has facilitated nicely.

I won’t be surprised if we don’t win this one, but we’re starting to look like a team. Defensive rotations, good ball movement, etc.

Still 11 minutes to go, but I was impressed when Ole Miss came out of halftime quick, Alex Called a strategic timeout and then boom, 14-4 run where I think some of teams in recent years may have folded.

Yay, we won

Hot damn, we held them off for a 1 point victory!

Much better performance, we didn’t fold when Ole Miss applied pressure to shut down McHenry and contain Brown.

A number of guys stepped up, teamwork was much better. Nice win.

McHenry was the difference especially in the first half, but this should help the team gel better.

I am pleasantly surprised by the win. This is a great accomplishment for Jensen and his squad. Still going to be a rough season, I think. But this is encouraging.
