Women's Basketball 2025-2026

Looking ahead this week for this weeks schedule

Wednesday, December 31 at home at 2pm
First game this week is at home against Arizona State a team that is undefeated so far this year, but a team that the Utes handled pretty easily last year. The devils haven’t played a really strong schedule, with their last three wins against more reasonable competition. At Oregon State and won in OT by 2, at Gonzaga with a 2pt win, and at home for Colorado with a 16 pt win.

They shoot .451/.324/.681 and they have an average 15.6/17.4 assist to turnover ratio. Their leading scorer is Gabby Elliott at 16.3 in an average of 33 minutes. She shoots .415/.321, so she gets her points on volume not accuracy. Best 3pt shooter is their 2nd leading scorer McKinna Brackens at .417. ASU is no pushover team any more.

On Saturday at home at 7pm is the extremely good and top ten rated TCU. Olivia Miles is still their engine, but they have a bunch of other excellent players. After watching them a couple of times, I think they are better than last year even after they lost Hailey Van Lith, Sedona Prince and Madison Conner. They have 4 players in double figure scoring and the big problem (other than Miles) is probably Silva at 6’7" who is an offensive rebounding force.

Two tough games at home that will help us understand how good they are.

Arizona State is a completely different team than we have ever seen. In my little summary above, I noted Brakens, but more as a 3pt shooter, but in the end, the Utes basically could find no one to stop her in the 4th quarter. Brakens did anything she wanted including going to the line at least 100 times.

I thought the refs were calling the game really closely and though it helped us when Sneed hit her FTs at the end to give us the lead, we left a bit too much time on the clock.

I noted at the start of ASU’s last play that the Utes came out with Evans on Brackens, but it was outside the 3pt area. So, a pass to the corner and a little pass to Brackens cutting in, whistle, foul, Brackens hits two and wins the game. It also doesn’t help that with 1.1 seconds left the only one open is Evans 25 feet from the basket. Not much of a chance there.

I thought for the entire fourth quarter why the Utes were doubling Brackens when she got the ball. Yes, it leaves another open, but it was clear what ASU’s strategy was. Get it to Brackens, and she either hits a shot or gets fouled (the later being the most often). In the end Brackens scored almost half of ASUs points. Crazy.

That said, ASU is really good, and they would have won by more if not for Elliott being in foul trouble all night. That preseason vote of them being in 12th place, though understandable in light of a new coach and a whole new team from the portal, is now seen as a joke.

I thought the Utes did a lot of nice things in the game. First, Ross played great defense on Brackens until she got into foul trouble and hit the bench at the same time Brackens started to go off. Also, Ross has been a beast on the boards the last few games, and this game, and when she went to the bench ASU got a couple of second chances, including a killer put back by Brackens at a critical juncture in the 4th. That said, the 5th foul on Ross, 30 feet from the basket was a terrible decision by her to play that aggressively.

It was awesome that Wilke finally had a game that I thought she should be having all along. I didn’t see her grab her shoulder even once during the game, and her shooting was on point.

It is clear to me that either Walker is still a bit injured, or that she just isn’t a point guard. She spelled Sneed a few times, and each time the offense was ragged and we saw more turnovers and less made baskets.

Sneed played one of her best games and should start at point guard for the rest of the season IMO. She has quick hands and plays much better defense than Walker does.

White was the emphasis on defense of ASU, and she fought hard to get her points. She also was the one that got Elliott into foul trouble as part of that ASU emphasis. I love her aggressiveness on offense.

The rest of the team played OK, the Evans/Otto pairing worked OK, with the hightlights being Otto hitting a 10’ after an almost turnover, and Evans making an unlikely driving layup that started 20 feet from the basket. Otto has good hands and feet and when she was in, the motion offense seemed to work better.

Walker took Foster’s minutes (who ended up not playing) and Crispe barely played, especially after she drew an easy foul call against her for pushing the devil to the floor.

All in all, a good game for the Utes despite the one point loss. ASU is very good and after these first conference games isn’t going to catch people napping on them going forward. This game shows that the Utes have the moxie needed to hopefully pull of a few upsets along the way and make the conference tourney.

Out-rebounding a huge team like TCU is impressive. I’ll have to go back watch the 1st half.

Fwiw…Olivia Miles, TCU’s star and one of the best in the country, played for Notre Dame last year – Utah beat ND last year. Ms Miles is 0-2 vs the Utes.

The rumor was she transferred for about $1.0 million in NIL money. She’s a fantastic player, for sure.

Wow, what a game. Had my brunch with the Utes this morning and what a way to start off a day.

The defense played by this team, especially in the 4Q (despite the back to back 3s) was impressive. Miles as usual got her points, Saurez does what she does, but the rest of the Frogs didn’t do much, which I think was a big key to the win. We didn’t let Silva dominate the boards, and we didn’t let the #3-8 players hurt us.

Offensively, I have said it more than once on here, when the team hits their 3s they are a team that will compete for the top of the conference. That said, the Toads almost won while only shooting 37% from the field and only 23% from three. So, playing at home and the Toads surrending to the defense played by Utah got the win, but it was hard fought.

Some individual highlights:

  • Evans and Otto hitting 3s (Evans with 5 assists with her passing out of the post and Otto really having a good game overall [10pts, 8rbs]).
  • Loni with great shooting, from all 3 levels. That 3-ball she hit to tie the game with the time dwindling was epic; and, last, but not least,
  • Ross came in the second half and really stepped up. Only one missed layup (a bugaboo for her) and finishing with 15pts and 6 rbs while taking the toughest defensive assignments.
  • Walker had some excellent moments (10 pts and 3 asts), especially handling the last few minutes of overtime. But, she still can’t really play defense one on one. Miles ate her up whenever that matchup showed.

I have a couple of issues on out-of-bounds plays (sorry LK flashback) where they ran plays for Sneed and Walker. Why not just put Wilke in where Sneed and Walker were. They did fine (12-18 for 67%) but Wilke is an over 90% shooter from the line. Maybe it was a decoy situation, if so, it worked.

Next up, a trip to the Kansas schools on Wednesday and Saturday. It doesn’t get easier at all.

Utah beat Kansas on the road yesterday. They are playing really good basketbal and they are fun to watch.

It was a good win on the road. It took them some time with the slow start. But overall, it was a good performance.

Great road win indeed! First Utah basketball team to get a win at Phog Allen Fieldhouse (a basketball shrine in a way).

Some thoughts:

  • The 3rd quarter over the last few games have been the best quarter. I have to assume good work/adjustments during halftime is the reason.
  • This team is getting better every game, and they are starting to get close to the goal of being efficient. Still too many turnovers while handling the ball. I remember Majerus teams where they were specifically told that dribbling was too be avoided. Running the motion offense that Petersen runs, I see a lot of that, but still some dribbles into traffic is a problem.
  • One of the things that has gotten better is rebounding. Ross is really dominating and is now a very good rebounder. This game she only had 9 rebounds (to go with 11 points and 3 assists) but she is has been real good. Also, got 14 rebounds from the guards, 19 if you count White as a guard.
  • The Utes shot 41.4/32.1/50.0(!) percent from FG/3pt/FT while KU shot 41.1/18.8(!)/71.4. KU not hitting their 3-balls was the difference.

Now onto Kansas State for a game Saturday at 3:00 PM MST on ESPN+. KSU has been decent but not as good as recent years, so a chance to get a road sweep of Kansas is now available and reasonable to achieve.

Another road win for the Utes holding on to beat KSU yesterday. They are now 6-0 in true road games this year. The Utes led by between 13 and 20 points most of the game, but KSU started pressing full court and cut the lead to 4. But Utah actually got the ball upcourt enough times to score and force KSU to start fouling. Free throws have been an issue this year, but they hit 15-16 this game.

Ross had a great game, getting another double double and setting her career high of 21 points and snagging 10 rebounds. The Utes were very successful at the “get the ball to the mid post and cut Ross to the hole” play. It worked several times. And Ross only had one foul, which is usually a bugaboo for her.

Foster had the best game of her career coming off the bench to score 17 points in only 18 minutes. Petersen trusted her enough to have her on the court at the end and she hit a huge three to stave off the KSU run and was 3-4 from the line. That was the first free throw she missed this season.

Wilke’s season long shotting slump continues (though she did score 14 this game). However, Petersen ran out of bounds plays for her so that she would be fouled down the stretch and she delivered going 5-5. She hasn’t missed a free throw all year but 5 of her overall 6 attempts was in this game. She needs to get to the line more.

Once again, this team turned over the ball a horrendous number of times, and that was before KSU starting pressing full court. Their soft half court press was enough for the Utes to dribble off their feet, passes delivered at foot level, etc. If there is a way to turn the ball over this team has found them all. As efficient as the offense can be, they would be blowing out teams if they could just secure the ball even half way better.

In the end a great sweep of the Kansas teams. Now it is home for #16 Baylor and Houston this Wednesday and Saturday.

One thing about the schedule this year, is that Utah has most of its toughest conference games at home this year. All of Baylor, Iowa State, TCU, Texas Tech, West Virginia, all of which are very tough outs, are at home (of course BYU). The only road games left are Okie State, BYU, ASU (revenge game), Colorado, and UCF.

A terrific road trip for the Utes. The team really need to solve the pressing/turnover issue. Both Kansas teams are in the lower half of the conference. Once we start playing the top-half teams (just TCU so far), mistakes will get amplified.

I don’t want to go into a lot of details about the large loss to Baylor last night other than to say…

  1. Baylor laid the game out there for Utah to win. Even though they won by 16, it was basically evenly played except for two runs by Baylor, one in the 2Q and one in the 3Q. They shot 39%/37%/57% for the game which put the game on the platter for Utah to take advantage.

  2. Spoiler alert, Utah didn’t take advantage as they shot 26%/12%/71%. Only 3-25 from three land AT HOME where you should be able to shoot better. Yes, Baylor has a highly rated defense and some of the shooting woes were because of how long and athletic Baylor is. But, frankly, Utah had a slew of open 3-pointers and a few botched easy layups. It all hurt very much to watch.

Ross was being guarded by a top shot blocker in the nation, and couldn’t get anything going on offense.

When, finally, they had Loni attacking the basket in the 4Q they got some fouls called and got to the line, before that, just endless attempts to throw the ball in the ocean from the boat and missing. Though they did win the rebounding battle 45 to 41 (that is an astounding number of rebounds available between the two teams).

In the end, I just can’t seem to get past how poorly the team shot. This was a very bad shooting day on a day when only bad might have won the game!!

Oh well, on to Houston for a Saturday road game with a Noon MST start. Houston is improved, but the Utes won’t have the advantage that BYU had playing them with 3 of their starters suspended.

The Utes got good shots much of the time, but my guess is that the close out and shot blocking ability of Baylor caused them to rush their shots. How many times did players get to the rim but just shoot the ball too hard or get a look from the three and just rush it.

That is a very good point, and overlooked by me. Something has to account for a 12% shooting percentage.

Nice win on the road today against a game but not good Houston team.

  1. The Houston announcer on ESPN+ with his sonorious tone was great listening until he consistently flipped back and forth in calling Brooke Walker “Walter” the whole game and misidentifying both Utah’s and Houston’s defense as “zone” when it very clearly was still man-to-man.

  2. The team missed Ross today being down sick, she would have helped the team in the second half.

  3. I am getting sick of the Utes building up big leads and then seeing them almost dissipate completely as the 4Q goes on. This game, 21 point halftime lead whittled down to 10 twice, including final score.

  4. Brooke Walker did not have a great game. Very limited basketball IQ from her. In the 4Q with a decent lead, she is rushing up the court and taking tough shots or simply falling over and committing turnovers. That 4Q was a perfect time to set up, and bleed some clock instead of rushing the offense. Finally, Utes up 17 with the ball with under 1 minute left and Walker turns the ball over, then on the other end, with only 18 seconds left, fouls a 3pt shooter who made the shot. The points given up did not matter as the Utes won anyway, but it sure does demonstrate some truly bad situational awareness.

  5. Turnovers continue to be a major issue in my mind. When Petersen when interviewed never brings it up. But, getting near 20 TO’s per game is really limiting this teams’ upper threshold of ability. Today was the bingo card of turnovers, bad entry passes, passing to no one, passing directly to the other team, passing to the right team, but throwing it at their feet, traveling, 3-seconds, dribbling off your thigh, dribbling off your foot, and exhaustedly, charges (especially on a 2-1 break, which happened twice today).

  6. In the first half, the team shot great (finally), then went cold the rest of the game. I would like to see one game where they are consistent.

  7. I know I am a bit negative today, and the team is winning (still undefeated on true road games, now at 7-0) but, these IQ and TO issues could easily be cleaned up, and the team would be a powerhouse.
