Utes @ UCLA

Dampier was 21/25, with no interceptions, against a Big 10 (and California) defensive backfield. Seems like he’s going to be alright.

I had to avoid coming here because I was going to watch the game on replay. Good game for the Utes.

One question. Why did it sound louder for Utah than for UCLA? I swear it sounded like there were more Utah fans in the stands.

The Rose Bowl is famous for opposing teams having more fans showing up than the bRuins.

Announced crowd of 35,000. From what I could tell, had to be 10,000-15,000 Ute fans. The ratio probably ballooned to 75% Utah in the 4th.

Bruin fans are enormously bent today, but I think DeShawn Foster’s comments after the game reveal a steady hand. If the Bruins rebound and make progress, they won’t be the worst team in the B1G, IMO. If they were 5-7 like us, last year, they could flip that, or be even. I’ll bet they maul UNLV, in response.

UCLA has talent, but Utah was better prepped, we certainly got a lot more out of our talent, scheme and coaching, then when it snowballed, it was over.

It was pretty cool listening to Mark Helfrich as the analyst. He spoke too much Xs and Os, probably needs to go more vanilla to mature on the air, but I’ll take all the serious FB tech talk I can get!

I need to gush a little about that 54-yard field goal. By a skinny freshman from Murray High. (Who happened to be an high school All-American at Murray High.) Looks like this kid is going to be a weapon.

Some things about Dillon Curtis I did not know until now:

Curtis set three new state records this season. He converted the longest ever, a 63-yard field goal against Tooele. He went 6-for-6 against Payson is the most field goals made in a game. Lastly, his 21 field goals for the year are the most ever in a single season.

Selected to the Navy All-American Bowl, Curtis will represent the state of Utah and his family. He will travel to San Antonio, Tx. next month for the All-Star game.

Curtis held offers from Utah, Utah State, Colorado, and Weber State before Washington made a late run at him. It was a back-and-forth battle between Utah and Washington down the stretch, but the hometown Utes were able to lock him in. Curtis will also graduate early and join the program next month.

The kid has a cannon for a leg.

On the broadcast they mentioned some of the players predicting Curtis would be able to kick a 70 yarder at RES, at altitude.

Think about thatwe wouldn’t even cross the 50 to get into FG position. That’s just plain loco.

If Dillon Curtis kicks a 70 yarder, the U should buy an insurance policy on that leg and see if we can get him to come back another year.

I wonder if can live up to the legend of Louie…

IIRC King Louie was accurate as all get, but didn’t have great leg strength.

Which is why he didn’t make an NFL roster.

He didn’t.

His longest kick was 53.

Yeah Phillips and Gay were both better placekickers who came after Sakoda. Louie is legendary for being a really solid dependable placekicker and punter, but also for his personality and charisma.

Louie went on to punt in the CFL, and as I recall held the league record for longest punt in a playoff game.

thanks for reminding the snobs that the NFL isnt the only place to play.

Well I definitely follow the CFL, albeit casually. To be fair, Louie’s CFL career was very short though he did make some impactful plays.

Side note, where else in the modern college football era has the same guy been a team’s primary placekicker and punter? I can’t recall seeing that happen anywhere.

Also why he didn’t stick in the CFL

I assumed Sakoda would join the Utah staff at some point.

He does not hold any records in the CFL. His longest punt was only 63 which is very far down the list.

Thanks, I was must have conflated something else in the depths of my brain and was obviously too lazy to look it up.

Maybe it’s for longest punt in the latter half of the 3rd quarter by a left footed kicker in a come from behind situation?
