Smith seems like a pro style guy though…not sure how well that would work with Dampier and/or Byrd. But maybe he could successfully adapt things.
KSL updated their list of Utah coaches leaving and Powell is on it
I have come to peace with what has happened and what will happen with Utah football in the coming weeks. I don’t blame Scalley for wanting to be HC. I don’t blame Kyle for changing his mind and deciding he wanted 5 more years at 10mil per. I don’t blame Randall for saying no. I don’t blame Kyle for jumping at Michigan or taking coaches and players with him. I don’t blame the coaches leaving for doing do. None are beholding to Morgan and all are doing what they believe is in their best professional and financial interests. I hope Atuaia, Luther, Swan and Shah stay. But they could all choose to leave.
Morgan has a tough job ahead. Next year or 2 will be rough. He will take a lot of grief over who he is able to hire, the players he is able to retain and recruit. If given the resources and time I believe he can make Utah competitive in the BIG12. If he doesn’t get the resources we will follow the same pattern we have seen with basketball.
Snowden to the portal. ![]()
I probably just need to avoid the internet today and see the damage all at once later.
Interesting comment from a Michigan friend as I was b*tching about Whitt cleaning Utah out on his way out the door:
Seems like it’s been so long since Utah has gone through a coaching transition that the fan base has forgotten that this is pretty much how it goes.
He’s…probably not wrong.
Two things 1) the portal is as much of a “this is what I can make” thing as it is a “I want to leave” thing
- The change with Kyle is somewhat unique.
It’s caught everyone off guard because is his years of “I will retire” “we have a plan” “we’ll make this smooth”
Is it the way things happen? Often yes. But I’d venture most of those didn’t have a guy who said he was going to retire for years suddenly clean house.
In these kind of transitions, we naturally want to keep as much of the band together as possible. But there are many similar musicians out there… how this band came to be in the first place.
If Morgan can land Jonathan Smith, then he / they will find others good coaches. His resume as an OC is stronger than any of Whitt’s OCs, his network doubles the size of ours.
On defense, Scalley I’m sure has a DC in mind (Swan? Shah?), hopefully keeps some staff, and adds a couple of new additions.
Then on to the portal we go!
All I’ve heard is it’s Swan.
Maybe Smith comes back for a bump in NIL, maybe he wants new scenery. Either way, I appreciate everything he’s done at Utah.
I’m confident we can find more talent, especially now that we’re not only offering our team culture.
A LB coach is a good candidate to be DC. Same with Safeties. They deal with the other parts of the D far more than DL or CB coach does.
We need to take a deep breath and remember that this is how coaching changes work in college football. This is how it works in the business world as well. It’s standard operating procedure for a guy to bring his trusted inner circle to a new job. Scalley is a level-headed, intelligent guy who will be fine. I’m confident he’ll get things put together quickly.
This reminds me of when Meyer left. All the assistants left except the DC, who was promoted to HC before the bowl.
After the game on our way out we ran into some very old friends of mine from Brigham City. I learned as we talked that Colton Swan is her nephew. Small world.

That’s true, but the difference is the portal and NIL. Morgan will have a more difficult and longer path to success.
Some late photos from the game:
Elvis is making his way up to the podium, Tao Johnson trying to stop with him with his back, kind of like some notable missed tackles. ![]()
You know what? To hell with that Elvis guy! I have that damn “Viva Las Vegas” song stuck in my head.
Devon rocks the shades impressively, Scalley pondering what he’s going to say, Tao in awe:
Allegiant, with the Luxor visible in the window. If somebody told me that hotel was built by real Egyptians, have to give them the benefit of the doubt. But hey, it was cheap!
Family on 3!
Wait, sorry,…$$$ on 3!!!
p.s. I don’t care if people leave for better opportunities and/or for more money. Having worked in management consulting, corporate restructuring, PE, etc., I get it. That said, the “how” is what makes it interesting. Having had opportunities to make much more $$$, I turned those down for personal reasons. Not everyone in my position would have made the same decisions. Nonetheless, “to thine own-self be true.”
Over/Under on Utes in portal. 27?
I think I’ll wait until the spring game to check the roster…
