The pet peeves thread

That sucks @Kosh. pain is never good. Get better.

what do you think of my drink menu? I am a former sailor and have to do my bit for the Legacy

Definitely more refined than the Mean Green and Mormon Red Death we used to brew for the student section back in the late 80’s.

As the son of a son of a sailor I am impressed with your alchemic mastery and taste

I was not aware there was a party at Kosh’s place.

Leslie there isn’t room here for a party I have barely room to swing in a cat if I ever actually get one. I suppose I could have I think I’m allowed up to eight or 10 people can meet down on the courtyard by the barbecue but that would be without it. The alcohol was mostly supposed to be taken up to the stadium tailgate bot that is.

Oh well, at least I have multiple things made up ready to go I think I’ll just keep keep the ones I’ll keep the like pina colada and super margarita mix in the freezer so they stay nice and chill they alcohol will keep them from freezing but I think I might take some of my black Russian and mix it into some hot coffee with some cream or whatever make myself a nice dick chiffon while I’m playing world of Warcraft all night long or something like that.

Dick Chiffon ? That was my “stage” name back in the mid Eighties.

I honestly have not be slightest clue how the hell the voice to text came up with dick chiffon. I mean I’m not even sure what my original words were, it’s that far off.

I think I was referencing having a nice hot coffee drink with booze in it to drink while playing games, but I have to admit that’s one of the things that were on the phone I might submit it for a damn you autocorrect entry.

This is not exactly a pet peeve post, it would more correctly belong in the old Pissing and Moaning thread we had on the old board, and I’m a bit apprehensive about seeming to always be complaining about something, but…

I decided during the game last night to see an audiologist and get advice about noise reducing/cancelling earphones for football games and other very loud activities. I’ll also ask my son who wears them regularly at games and concerts, and am appealing to anyone on the board, who may have some experience with them and recommendations.

I value my hearing, and always wore noise reducing devices in the 70s and 80s when I was actively playing music in loud environments.

Now for the pissing and moaning part: I am happy to suffer the consequences of listening to very loud groundswells of cheering, jeering, etc. at a football game and eager to enjoy the sound of a college band in the stands, but the gametime experience at football games at the U, has become so obnoxious I’m going to fight back, or at least defend myself.

Last nights’ game was absolutely awful in terms of:

  • excessively loud, high pitched, screaming announcements by the obnoxious, (don’t know his name) PA announcer. I’m NOT talking about the stadium game-time announcer, but the screaming maniac doing all the non-game stuff.
  • constant music, at WAY too high a volume, seemingly in between every play, sometimes to fill only a handful of seconds,
  • PA broadcast of the Ute Marching band. The sound is louder than necessary, the sound quality terrible, and it drowns out the actual band.

While we absolutely loved the actual game, last night, my wife and I both left complaining bitterly about not being able to speak to each other or to our stadium neighbors about the game, plays, thoughts, questions, because during virtually every second of non-game action, there was very loud, poorly chosen, “stadium music” drowning out our conversation.

We went to the game early to have dinner in our seats at the stadium, and will never do so again. The Stadium music was so poorly one-dimensional, and so loud, that I was literally becoming anxious as I was trying to eat and digest my meal.

I’m using the term Music loosely; it is actually the same old 60-ish pieces of music. I don’t expect the stadium music selector to cater to my musical tastes, but how about ANY sort of variety, or something we didn’t hear last week.

Or, how about just unamplified stadium and crowd noise with an unamplified college football band as accompaniment?

Rant over, and yeah, I probably need to add, get off my lawn!

In addition to 20 years at RES, I’ve been attending metal shows since I was 16. That’s going on 35 years and just under 500 shows at this point. So I have a little experience with “uncomfortably loud”.

I would highly, highly recommend that you invest in some decent concert earplugs. You can get them on Amazon for pretty cheap ($20-50) and they’re absolute lifesavers for when things get really loud. I’ve never felt the need for them at RES, but they’ve saved what’s left of my hearing when I started using them at concerts 20’ish years ago.

Agree. And basketball is even worse.

I am going to make the same comments on the PA volume if I get an email asking about the game experience. The PA during time outs was way too loud. Being kind of a nerd, I have a NIOSH noise meter app on my phone. When the crowd was quiet and it was essentially just the PA it was between 88 and 90db sustained. That’s not insignificant. They really need to bring it down some. When the crowd gets loud, that’s fine, but the aural onslaught has to end.

Edit: Here’s what Google’s AI came back with about 90 db exposure

Sustained exposure to 90 dB of sound can cause permanent hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and other health problems. The risk of damage increases with duration, as the safe listening time at 90 dB is reduced to about four hours per week. Long-term exposure can also lead to stress, cardiovascular issues, and cognitive problems due to the body’s physiological stress response.

Max four hours per week? Ok, that’s a football game and one and a half basketball games. I think I’ll start taking my Hear-Os to the games, but that won’t help fix the biggest in-game problem. We still won’t be able to talk to the person sitting next to us about the game during time outs.

I have what I consider to be very nice noise cancellation Sony earbuds that I wear to the hockey games I attend (season seats) because the music is very loud, and there are no quiet moments. Expensive, but very much worth it to me.

With them in I can still hear the skates on the ice, the noise of a nice hit against the boards, the ref’s whistle, and the clank of the puck of the goal post. And, at the same time, keep the music noise from killing me.

Dave Fox and Frank Dolce’s amateur & high school level banter while calling HS football games on Ch 12. I’d rather hear college students do it. It’s no wonder they’re both calling HS games than anything higher.

This is brought on by my watching the West v Bountiful playoff game this afternoon. My son is an assistant at West so I’m biased, but the total lack of respect from Fox and Dolce was ridiculous. West had a couple of great interceptions and the way the tone of those clowns went to disappointment rather than noting what a good play it was is horrible. It’s HS ball. All the calls should be noting positives of what the kids are doing.

Being so overtired physically and emotionally that you can’t hold train of thought in your head to have a verbal conversation. Everything devolves into word salad.

Moving around on autopilot and coffee. It reminds be of BASIC training, only with a lot less screaming and overall loudness.

Disneyland with the kids is fun.

Disneyland with the kids in the middle of a 4-hour torrential downpour is decidedly less fun.

Did California Adventures today. We’ve been at the park for 5 hours and so far have ridden…one ride.

We were in line for 90 minutes on one ride that broke down (Cars) then in line for 45 minutes on another that they shut down for weather (Incredicoaster). Currently standing in another hour-long line.

Really feeling like I got my moneys worth for the $1,000 I spent on tickets so far. :man_facepalming:

EDIT: 45 minutes in line, and they just announced that this ride (Spiderman) has broken down. I’m about ready to lose my sh*t.
