The new coach speculation thread

I said Craig Smith or someone like him. I want an experienced head coach with a record of success.

Whoever it is will have to bring in a whole new team. At least that’s what it’s looking like now.

We have now lost 5 players. Allen being the latest.

Is there a deadline for entering the portal? Why not wait and see what happens with a new coach?

Because they are 19 to 22 years old.

No deadline. The only urgency is to get your name out there while there are still landing places available. Whit said that there is probably about 1 spot available for every 4 players in the football portal. Probably the same for basketball.

I am curious about Harlan’s competency. When he was hired, I had read a small blip about his past mistakes. Don’t remember where I read it. Neither here nor there, I guess.

I don’t really understand your gripe, especially when it’s been reported the team had quit on Larry.

I liked Larry, but it’s become obvious keeping him was pointless

I bet there are even less in basketball,

While there are far less D1 football schools, the high scholarship numbers mean there are far more spots.

There’s a rumor on Twitter that Utah is hiring Craig Smith from Utah State.

My gripe? With LK’s firing? I have none. His termination and Harlan’s competency are two separate matters. Plus, I did not state Harlan was incompetent, just that I had read something somewhere; hence, I was curious. my assessment of Harlan’s performance is neutral so far.

Your inference of my posting is not what I had in mind.

When you question his competency in this thread, while also talking about ā€œpast mistakesā€ it’s hard to not infer you think he’s made mistakes here.

I’m not sold on Harlan one way or the other, but I do think many people like to blame him for things Chris Hill left him to deal with.

SL Tribune & Stadium both report it’s a done deal. Craig Smith is the Utes coach.

ESPN reporter now saying the same. Craig Smith. 1st recruit has to be Timmy.

I hope it works out and I hope he’s remarkable.
I do find it interesting that so many programs in this state seem to hire just within the program or the state itself. It’s not like we’re Hawaii…
I really thought for sure that Gary Anderson was going to wind up coming back in some capacity. No hard feelings. Just don’t think that would have been reasonable at all.
Go UTES!

The success of this hire hinges entirely on his ability to retain Carlson, Jantunen, Larssen, and Martinez. If he keeps Allen too, that’s a bonus. We’ll know soon whether this is a long term coach or a replace in three years coach.

Smith is doing cartwheels right now. A week ago, he had just lost in the first round again and bombed an interview with Minnesota. He was looking at his roster in Logan and realizing his tournament run was over. This must feel like a miracle.

OK. Craig Smith. Seems like an opposite-field single, certainly not a home run. Maybe it’s unrealistic for fans to hope otherwise. Anyway, let’s hope he can win and generate fan enthusiasm. I’ll be in my seats next November. Go Utes!

We may never know whether it was plan b or plan c. Was it ever serious with JB? We know it wasn’t the plan when the decision to fire Larry was made.

The important thing is that it’s the plan now. Just because people aren’t excited about it doesn’t mean it can’t work. Larry left the cupboard full. If Smitty can capitalize on that, momentum will carry him to more success.

I think a lot of us feel this way.

I wonder if he’ll be able to re-recruit some of the players that are leaving.

He’s potentially inheriting a much better situation than most new coaches. Much better hand than we dealt than Boylen or Larry. That’s an encouraging thing.
