My dad used to complain incessantly about the Provo Daily Herald, but he kept buying it because it was the only local newspaper as the SL Trib and Des News never covered anything goings on in the locale.

Yea, that’s what I thought, til my family moved from the Avenues in SLC to White City (Sandy) in the early 70’s and I met a wonderful young lady who likewise had just relocated from Pleasant Grove to White City.
In her company, I was introduced to the area south of the Point of the Mountain, and in particular to all things Pleasant Grove, particularly the Purple Turtle, for shakes and hamburgers after hikes way, way, way up the face of Mount Timpanogos.
It was, and she was, my only real Utah County experience. People are people, regardless of where they were born, who their parents are, or their local culture, and in this case, there’s still a bit of feeling of loss from that one that got away.

I grew up in White City in the 70’s, moving in 1976 with my family. Lived near Alta View Elementary, where my mom taught 4th grade. From reading your posts, you are quite likely to be a bit older than me, so we probably didn’t meet when we were wee tykes.
Exploring the gully was our thing to do.

My family moved to White City, from the Avenues in Salt Lake, in the summer of 1972. I was 16, and went to Hillcrest High School for my Junior and Senior years. We lived just west of the Eastmont Middle School. I moved back to the Avenues when I married at age 20 in 1976.
I did a bit of exploring of the gully with my brothers, but what I remember most was the joy of taking my father’s motorcycle and riding the open fields, gulleys and ravens east and south east of 13th East and Sego Lily Drive. It was all open land all the way to the mountains in those days, save a few homes in the old Pioneer town of Granite and the few houses then along Dimple Dell drive. It’s all developed now.
I just sold my mother’s home in White City last January, after she passed away at age 90, last October. Her’s was one of the earliest homes built in the area, built I think in 58 or 59.

The first home i lived in was on Logan Ave. We’d go down to the gully at the end of the block to play and explore, but we had to watch out for hoodlums like LAUte.

Ditto. The gully was a lot of fun. Did you ever hike all the way up to the Bell Canyon Reservoirs? I attended Eastmont from 83-85. Unfortunately, after that I was at Alta from 85-89. Eastmont was a lot of fun, but Alta was pure hell.

From Inner Harbor, and some of the stuff from MCC race:
The red ship, is a floating mobile lighthouse. It has “Chesapeake” painted on its side. In the background is the National Aquarium. I don’t recall the name of the sub. It was closed when we went by it.
The 9-11 Memorial has one of the beams from the Twin Towers. We missed the time to go into the building that has more information. Another visit for another day I think.
The tall ship is the USS Constellation. Again, we weren’t there when it was open.

I actually caught a game there in summer 1991.. Wonderrful place, still relatively sparkling and new. NOW, 34 years later, would be interesting to compare. I mean, SLC built Frankling Quest Field (ended as Smith’s Ballpark) in 1994 and thanks to the cupidity and ego of the Miller family, it’s gonna be trashed after only a 30 year run. Sigh.
