RIP baseball legend Steve Dalkowski

Age 80 and living in a nursing home. The virus got him.

Supposedly the hardest throwing pitcher in baseball history. His legend was built by stories in Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, etc. I first heard about him around 1970 from one of the magazines. He played in the Orioles system, and Earl Weaver built on the legend after managing Dalkowski in spring training.

Throwing strikes was an issue. In 1960 in Class C, he threw 170 innings, striking out 262 and walking 262. That’s not a typo.

He was the model for Nuke LaLoosh in Bull Durham.
