I had never seen a Miyazaki movie before that was, but I did see it in the theater and it left me thinking very deeply when I walked home. Very powerful movie. Suzanne pleschette did the voice of you baba come and Michael chiklis and Lauren Holly did her parents.
The whole movie is incredible, but thereâs two scenes that get me every time.
One is the train scene. Watching all the shadowy workers get on and off the train and disappear into who-knows-where as part of their daily routine is both immensely beautiful and deeply sad.
The second is a very quick âblink and you miss itâ scene. Itâs when No-Face is trying to get Chihiro to take the gold. He assumes that Chihiro will be like everyone else and greedily grab the gold from him. When she hesitates, he shifts from being a gluttonous, growling monster, and simply extends his hands with his usual kind âAhâ sound. I donât know why, but that specific scene of watching a creature who doesnât really understand how greedy society works seeing kindness and courage just really hits me in the feels. Especially these days.
Thereâs a dozen other parts of the film I could go on and on aboutâŚitâs all just so incredibly beautiful. Even if you donât generally like anime, I would highly, highly suggest you watch Spirited Away.

I saw them at La Caille 20 something years ago as a volunteer for the Black and White Ball fundraiser. Out of maybe 300 people - all dressed in black tie - maybe 20 or so, (including moi) were standing right in front of these guys and they sounded great!
People were like âUghh! Whatâs Blood, Sweat & Tears meanâŚ?â
It means exceptionally tight music.
I just saw this, and havenât thought about him in years, but in my younger life especially all the way back to the 60s, 70s, and 80s, I recall regularly watching and valuing the insight of his PBS programs. RIP!
