The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh died today at 84. His bass lines were really cool. Much more complicated and melodic than a lot of people give him credit for. Fare thee well.

I just saw this. As a forum member with a point to place “Grateful” in my moniker, I must say, this hits particularly hard.
Child prodigy, violinist, cum classical trumpet player studying abstract classical composition at Berkely, and then, San Jose State.
Perfect pitch… Jerry gives him a bass and says " I want you to be my base player" and Phil says “I don’t know how to play bass” and Jerry says, “you’ll figure it out…”

The hack cover band I play in is trying* to learn, “I Know You Rider,” to add it to our sets. Our bass player wants to do it right, and has been dazzled and frustrated working on Phil’s bass part. He would be all over the neck. The more I listen and watch video of him playing the more impressed I am.
*Well, most of us are trying. The drummer is putting in minimal effort. I’m about done with the guy.

Along with Young Frankenstein, I also loved her in Mr. Mom. That’s a fantastically underrated film. Her small role in Tootsie was notable, as well.
