I don’t know the details of his limb salvage proceedure, but I would recommend hanging the cleats and developing his foundation for the benefit of others, which I’m sure he will do.

If he retires he forfeits a lot of money. He has 2 years left on his contract at big bucks. He has to say stuff like this to make sure the team cannot say he retired, even if it is obvious he will never play again.
