The missing ingredient has been serious financial support to match what programs like Oregon were doing. A couple of years ago Whit said the best available evidence was they were spending about $20M on NIL. Last year TTech spend $28M on NIL… now in the playoffs.
It’s not as simple as shooting wads of cash out of an air gun, but the old Utah formula of finding diamonds in the rough and developing overlooked talent hit a ceiling.
Success begets success, and success with additional resources addedshould help close the gap, approximating what Indiana and TTech have done. A key is to not blow money and further ignite the existing arms race, but smoothly pull up to the table.
Can’t / won’t happen overnight, but should start to be noticeable.
It’s definitely there, though he softened things a little by explaining it was his decision to step down, then seek other opportunities, publicly said Utah’s been great.
It would really be interesting to get Taylor Randall’s perspective, but that may not happen for a while. He supposedly nixed the $10M-5 year extension idea.
The Scalley era has been in the works for a while, it seems Randall has been solidly on board with that idea, didn’t want it derailed.
I’m more than a bit hoping this signals an end to the ultra homer hiring practices in Utah. Constantly recycling Utah players and coaches is a waste of opportunity so many times. Bring in that new exotic outside blood!
Being the OC pretty much eliminates his ability to be an effective OL coach.
Harding has spent 12 years with Kyle. Through all kinds of strange offense. I don’t think there was ever a scenario where Harding wasn’t going with Kyle once he decided retirement wasn’t what he was doing.
maybe I’m crazy, but I view Harding as a bigger loss than Beck. In my mind I keep seeing that clip of Harding confronting Whitt during a game saying, “fire me” thinking maybe there was a rift between the two.
