Craig Smith Canned

I deleted my X account a few weeks back and it felt great.

I don’t have any social media accounts. I deleted them in 2018. I decided I was done with the electronic algorithm trying to steer my thought processes. Nevermind in 2017 I spent four months researching and writing my MRP and being disgusted by the amount of bad information I had to shovel through. Comparing that process to the one I went through in 1988-1989 to write an MRP in my undergraduate time, it was a total hell.

Back on track, it says a lot about Smith’s kids carrying on for the team. I’m sure Smith loves his team, and honestly it is too bad things didn’t work out for him. Why does it seem that so many of the nice guys in coaching don’t succeed and the bad actors seemingly do?

Yeah, I have nothing against Smith as a person. He just wasn’t the right guy for this job any longer. I’m old, so I remember Lynn Archibald. He was a super nice guy that I don’t think a soul could have disliked. I went to one of his camps when I was 9 or 10. He took time with every kid there. But he was a poor bench coach and didn’t get the job done. Then came Big Rick. He was one of the best tacticians and X’s and O’s coach ever, but he certainly did tick off a lot of people. I went to one of his camps when I was 16. He scared the crap out of everyone there. He sat on kids when they screwed up drills. No joke.

Back to Smith, I’m sure he’ll land on his feet at a mid-major program somewhere.

The thing that I didn’t like about Rick is the yearly ā€œI don’t know, I should at least listen to the offersā€ drama. Who knows how many recruits we lost due to this, because you know other coaches were telling recruits ā€œyou don’t want to go there, Majerus won’t be there by the time you’re a sophomoreā€

anyone else have similar feelings?

  1. Do I want Utah basketball to be more successful? Absolutely

  2. Would I love to be back in the NCAA Tournament? Definitely

  3. Do I want Utah to go all in with NIL in men’s hoops? Hell No, not until the system has more structure and limits

It’s official:

Yup. Fans are often clamoring for more NIL money, but then seem to always look to multi-millionaires and billionaires for support – all for sports at which most them were never much any good. Perhaps some should clamor for other things (no politics here. :joy:).

My son went to two camps at the U when he played HS ball. The Majerus role by the end had reduced to an hour of listening to him say, ā€œListen to your parents, study hard, etc,ā€ then maybe 30 minutes of drills and the he’d leave grumbling about being a baby sitter.

Some funny stuff that did happen at those was Donny Daniels working with the kids on low post moves. He told my boy he’d do well with those after he had a growth spurt and poor Chris had to say he was a 5’8ā€ senior to be. Daniels just said, ā€œOh. Sorry.ā€

The thought of Rick sitting on anything other than a giant beanbag chair is disturbing.

It happened. I promise. I made sure to do that drill properly.

That’s the case in far too many walks of life!

As a species we like scandal and chaos.

I had the privilege of working with and being mentored by one of the nicest men and lawyers around. Stephen Nebeker. He was total class at all times and I learned much just from his interactions with clients and opposing counsel.

If you don’t follow Steve Bartle, who was formerly with Utezone, but is now with KSL, you should. He has a great article on the pursuit of Alex and it is much different from what most ā€œinsidersā€ have suggested. Take a read.

From the interaction Josh Eilert had with Jensen, I would not be surprised to see him at least be offered the opportunity to stay at Utah.

With Jensen’s commitments to the Mavericks and Andre’s (I hope he joins) with the GLeague, somebody needs to recruit.

I havent heard one way or the other on Andre specifically, but the G league is set up in a way that I dont think he would create any hard feelings whatsoever if he bolted immediately.

But I completely agree with your point; we need multiple people in place to work the phones and emails on March 24 when the portal opens.

I knew him as a young person and admired him. I just read his obituary and was stunned to read of the passing this last week of his son Stephen. I grew up in the same neighborhood in the Avenues and went to all the same schools as young Stephen and his sisters (and knew some of their extended family in Federal Heights). The whole group were and are wonderful people.

When I was in college, I worked as a runner for Nebeker’s firm. He was the nicest man. Funny story. One semester, I had an online class when online classes were just starting to be a thing. My computer at home was broken, and I had an assignment to complete urgently. I was talking about this was some of my fellow college student-runners, and Mr. Nebeker’s admin assistant overheard me. She told me Mr. Nebeker was out of town and that it would be fine if I used his computer in his office. So, she let me into his office, got me on to his computer, and I started working. Not 20 minutes later, Mr. Nebeker walks in, shocked to see me sitting in his nice chair at his big desk on his computer. My stomach dropped; I thought I was going to get fired. As I began to apologize and tell him what was happening, he smiled and told me I was welcome to use it anytime. I was relieved, and I was so impressed with his kindness and generosity. (But couldn’t understand why his admin assistant had told me he was gone when he in fact showed up minutes later.)
