Barnes is QB2?

No word on what happened, but…that’s not good news on Rose.

Sounds like he got hurt during the scrimmage when he was hit (it was a live scrimmage)

Other source saying broken rib and lacerated liver, which would explain wording on being “released.”

Damn.

EDIT: Hayden Furey’s mom said it was a freak accident where Rose jumped on a loose ball.

Barnes it is then.

Don’t QB’s wear flack jackets these days to avoid this sort of injury?

That injury is some scary stuff.

I saw a cheerleader dropped during one of those girl throws in a high school football game. She was carted away and I’ll never for get the prolonged look of anguish on her face. This girl was in sheer agony and every bump the cart took seemed to shock her. Turned out she had fractured ribs and lacerated liver. OUCH.

Hope Rose makes a complete recovery and I bet he will be careful jumping on any loose balls in the future!

Wynn first injured his shoulder jumping on a fumbled ball and then getting pummeled by defenders. Although the practice when he was injured was live and he was live, the Utes QBs had been instructed to not fall on loose balls. I would be surprised if that rule changed, but instinct is hard to remove by imposing a rule.
Hopefully Rose will recover and return to 100% although him playing this year is doubtful.
The coaches will play the guy who gives them the best chance to win. If it is Barnes, that means he gives them that chance. Although Barnes has played some ball for the Utes, he has never received QB1 practice reps. That means he was only getting 20% of the practice reps.

Whitt apparently just told Josh Furlong that if Cam can’t go that Barnes will start, with significant playing time for Nate.

That opens the door with a little over 2 weeks to go for Barnes and Nate to get a lot of 1st team reps, and for Lud to develop a solid game plan to use their skills.

If Cam’s going to be out, I’d rather our 2s get their feet wet this season at home. Week 2 will be formidible enough.

This from Josh Newman. Rising's clock ticking louder as Rose injury slides Barnes in as presumed starter vs. Florida | KSL.com

I would’ve been surprised if Barnes wasn’t QB 2. The other guys are still trying to get used to game speed, and week one is a total wildcard.

In the wildcard situation, you go for what you know. Hopefully Nate is ready in case they needs him.

Also, while Florida has a ton of talent, they aren’t Alabama. You can beat them.

In fact, the winner is probably the team who was the least amount of turnovers and can run the ball. If you have faith in Jackson and Bernard and your OL then you’ve won IF you don’t turn the ball over.

That screams Barnes to me. Dude won’t be great, but he will be calm, collected and smart. We get up 7-10 points and it’s over.

People are so quick to dismiss Barnes. He has played in 3 meaningful games. On the road at Wazzu as a last minute starter and coming in for an injured Rising against OSU and Penn St. he directed a win against Wazzu, a last minute TD drive to tie the score against OSU. He was not sharp against Penn State, but the Utes were trailing when he entered the game. He will be fine and the Utes will win if the defense doesn’t give up huge runs to the Florida QB and Barnes doesn’t throw an interception into coverage in the end zone at the end of the game.

I agree. We haven’t seen the best of Barnes, yet.

Rose was thought to be the dark horse, but before getting injured Whitt pointed to Barnes as having the best command of the offense, ahead of both Rose and Nate.

Add in the experience of coming in as QB2 in three really big games, and Bryson is the most valuable QB of those not named Rising, right now.

I’m optimistic, and with Nate and Lud having 2 weeks to scheme… if the OL does their part, we can generate enough points to win.

#2 was always going to be which player was least likely to turn the ball over and that is almost certainly Barnes.

Sorry if this has been commented on already…is Barnes on scholarship yet?

Yes.

Are the Utes better off with Barnes or Cam with the same lack of mobility as Nix in the Oregon game a year ago?

Did the team discourage recruits or transfers this off-season because they wanted Rising to be QB? Or, was he our best option?

Listened to an interview of Lud from earlier today. A couple of things:

Said both Barnes and Johnson have benefited greatly from QB reps being split between only 2 guys. Both were better in yesterday’s scrimmage than they were the prior week.

Was asked when they would start preparing a game plan for Florida that did not include Cam. He said spring ball. They always knew that Cam being ready was the target, but you prepare for everything.

Go to ESPN700 and listen. The Shah interview is great ad well.

Great interview with Lud, agreed. He’s a bit more transparent than Whitt. The feedback on the RBs and JJ’s learning the fine points of the position, foot placement and moving the D flow before planting, great stuff.

Pretty close to 10 deep up front, quality depth.

It will be interesting to see how Mathews and Pittman shake out. Emery Simmons and Pittman made a jump in getting playbook down.
