A stroll down memory lane

I can’t find video highlights, but my first ever Utah/BYU game was the ‘78 game in Rice Stadium. It had snowed the night before. We fell behind, and I swear half the fans left at halftime. I still remember the thrill of the Gomez to Henry pass that won it. Afterward on the way out, I got pelted with ice balls from “classy” Zoobies. One got me in the face and broke my glasses. It also established my intense dislike of them ever since.

My wife likes to tell of how she had a premonition we’d win. For those of you who know know her, you may have heard her talk about “the voice.” She told her 1st husband they had to get tickets. He didn’t believe her but caved. And this happened.

I saw “the voice” play out in 1999 in the casinos following the LV Bowl when we were dating. Trust me, husband two pays attention.

I loved that game.

That may have been the most fun I’ve ever had at a BYU-Utah game. It was a storybook finish, one year after another LaVell Edwards/Doug Scovil RUTS loss – the one when Wayne Howard guaranteed Utah would win the next year. I recall sitting with a group of ASUU and ASBYU student officers. We Utah fans all went nuts and I must admit the BYU guys we were with were very good sports. (Easy to be a good sport after losing for only the second time in two decades.) My, my, how the football world has changed since then. Actually, I’d say the football world has returned to normal after a short anomalous period.

This is clearly in the days before horse-collar tackles were illegal. There must have been half a dozen tackles aided by grabbing the jersey collar.

Lol, I noticed the same thing. My thought was, “dang, so that’s why you can’t do that anymore.”

We couldn’t have played much worse for 2 1/2 quarters then boom. The look on the BYU fans as they knew they had finally beaten us only to lose in the end . The cougar tears were plentiful and delicious.

Could not find a video (I have it on VHS tape somewhere - lot of good that will do me…), but one of my favorite rivalry games; the “white out” 2003 win in Provo.

It was the first year with new coach Urban Meyer, and the Utes won in Provo, 3-0. The victory snapped BYU’s NCAA record for scoring in 361 straight games—BYU’s first shutout since a 20–0 loss to [Arizona State] on September 25, 1975. Defensive Coordinator, Kyle Whittingham was awarded the game ball for the defensive effort.

I and two buddies, attended a wonderful tailgate at one of the Catholic Parishes in Provo prior to the game, then went to the game bundled up like a terrible ski day.

I recall saying to them about 15 minutes into the second half, “I believe that the Utah coaches are planning to try to make this 3-0 lead hold up for the final score.” They both laughed at me, but that is precisely what happened.

The conditions were so brutal, that by the end of the game, we could literally not see the action from our very good seats, at midfield in the lower level.

I never want to attend a football game in these conditions again, unless, of course, it is a Rice Eccles South - where we would certainly win again, and probably in a similar score

Go Utes!

Problem about beating BYU or speaking about beating BYU. Is like our teams success depends on beating them. They are more dependent on Utah. Their only sellout last year Utah. They returned 1500 tickets in 2018. I wonder if played how much they will return?

2019 Utah @ TDS…the greatest 4th Quarter drive without a touchdown in the history of college sports. Had East Provo fan actually stayed to experience the carnage of watching the life get sucked out of their team, it would’ve been even better.

GO UTES!!!

1995 Utah-byu game. Utes win in a blowout. This game is rarely talked about since there was no drama, I believe it was somewhat of an upset. The offense and defense looked really good. I forgot how good a recruit Fu was at RB. I don’t think we’ve had a freshman RB with that much of an impact since. For being 5’10" and 160 pounds, Mike Fouts had a nice arm.

Yes, Yes and YES!

I remember enjoying that drive immensely, watching it live. Just went back and watched it again, and it is still a thing of beauty.

Running 9+ minutes off the clock, moving the ball 80+ yards, and then rather than RUTS, taking a few knees to end the game… As the old saying goes, Everyone in the stadium knew what the Utes were going to do, and BYU could not stop them.

I can’t wait for the next football season (whenever that happens).

Go UTES!

The 1995 game may be the most overlooked Utah win over BYU. It was the third straight win over BYU, something that hadn’t happened since 1968-71. It was also a rout (BYU scored a late TD, or it would have been 34-11), and Utah dominated in every fashion. I think Utah picked off Sarkisian five times.

I was at this game, and it was great to see the helpless looks on BYU fans’ faces. Though Utah lost the following year, this victory seemed to usher in the changing of the guard.

Final score was 34-17 but game wasn’t nearly that close. BYU had just a field goal and under 100 yards offense after 3 quarters.

How could I forget this game? I had to work the next morning so I couldn’t make it to the Rose Bowl. We really were lucky that he missed those field goals at the end of the game. They were both pretty close.

I loved how powerless they were to stop us on that drive. They knew what we were going to do, and we knew what we were going to do. And they still couldn’t do a thing about it. It was so much fun to watch.
