Have enough athleticism that the players will be fun and entertaining to watch. But may very well see our share of critical misses from the line. careless turnovers, and at times when a defensive stop is needed, offensive rebounds leading to second chance points.
But I trust Alex to get us back in the right direction over time.
Watching the Weber State game. Wow, Utah looks bad. Lots of individual athleticism but seems to have no clue how to play the game. So much 1v1 and horrible defense. Not sure if it’s me, but the team sure looks to have a low collective BB IQ.
Its a win and ill take it and like monday night, but man we are so far away from where we need to be.
Okonkwo should be back next saturday and ibi traore went through at least some of warmups per Bartle. Those are at least 2 guys who can rebound and hopefully help protect the paint.
Utah was so bad on the boards in the first half. They also had too many unforced steals by driving a jumping with nowhere to go. Alex is very calm on the sidelines. I think he understands that this year is going to be difficult and is doing his best to be encouraging and calm. Weber played hard.
Learned listening to pregame interview with Weber coach that Dame Lillard is the Weber St. General Manager and is heavily involved in recruiting.
This game had so much to learn from, but on to Holy Cross on Monday.
Long way to go, so much development needed, but nice to get the Hunty rocking and gut out a win. The team is so raw.
So many guys need to become options off the guard play, but having two experienced scorers who can get to the rim is the offensive foundation. McHenry had a drive late where he gave a tiny hesitation that froze the defender, along with some huge 3s. Brown is an athletic mismatch against most guards, haven’t seen his long game.
I hope the coaches keep the other guys engaged and developing. If Howard gets things together, he’s got Dominique Wilkins level athleticism.
Howard is amazing in the layup line pre-game. Ridiculous dunks. Unfortunately he appears clueless on the court.
Traore is a 1 trick pony—shooting. But tonight he could not hit a thing. No post up game & not much off the dribble. He is very athletic but not a rebounder.
Sanders is really good. Dawes was a force on the boards.
Patrick is hopeless on defense, Streaky shooter.
No inside game. The outside weave is just that, an outside weave. No cuts off it & or hard screens.
I’m really interested to see how Alex guides this team. He’s not the table pounder Rick was, clearly, a lot of Zen in the boy from Centerville.
It seems like he’s building out from the strengths, but there’s a long way to build. Supposedly the other Traore will be playing soon, looks more comparable to Dawes in terms of size.
We sat by Sanders’ dad and his sister (I think). He said we were lucky, Weber out played us. (Truth). I asked what he thought of Brown and McHenry - “They bailed our ■■■■■ out tonight, but it was fun getting the win”.
It’s always fun to beat a rival. And rivals are always fired up for the Utes. Utah has lost to Weber countless times.
When I was a manager for a Sweet 16 Utes team the Utes had just lost by 1 at that ■■■■■■ little high school gym they used to have. I looked up and Buster Matheney was plowing into the bleachers after a fan who was running for his life.
I think I was at that game when I was a freshman at Weber State. They were good under Neil McCarthy. They had a really good freshman from Rock Springs named Bruce Collins who was a great leaper and a junior forward named Sam Mayhew who went off for 45 against Utah State later in the year. It was the last year in Wildcat Gym and they moved to the Dee Center in 1977.
I still remember when Buster got busted and had to get bailed out. Marcroft in the weekly interview asked Jeff Jonas about it, and Jeff said they had to put together the “Bail out Buster” fund.
