This seems reasonable. Why should people expect the men’s cross country team to have equal revenue sharing with gymnastics?
The revenue sports have helped elevate facilities and support staff for non-revenue sports, but they’re still not equal, they never have been, and it’s dumb to think they should be.
Assume, in this hypothetical landscape, that the level of athletic talent we recruit is far below the level which would attract NIL monies, no matter how significant the improvement, true student athletes. Think NAIA or NCAA D-III.
You may well be right. I do not believe the NCAA, feckless as it often seems, went into the negotiations without having Title IX’s preservation in mind.
I think he means the HPER at the U, the previous recreation complex where great pickup basketball games went on, etc.
One time I was playing in some pickup games with FB players and a couple of Lady Utes and some other wannabes like myself, and then whoever was running the open gym kicked everyone out.
On my way to my car, I saw why they shut things down - new Jazz rookie Karl Malone and some other serious players were coming in to work out.
Ah…I knew it was a reference to a rec center, always thought it was the one on BYU’s campus.
I never entered that building while attending the U other than to use the restroom a few times, I think.
I appreciate the humor.
That said, this could be the future of Utah athletics as we continue to be left out of the mega-dollar conferences and/or semi-pro status.
This thread was a response to @utefansince79. I was attempting to provide an alternative to their ‘long gone’ notion, by offering the possibility of a different class of player. These student athletes with their facial hair and HPER experience would still be Utes. And, I would follow their athletic exploits as I do now with our current Utes.
The pickup basketball games at HYPR were things of legend. I remember Ron Boone showing up and taking 4 total scrubs, then whooping on the opposition. Dude held the half court all night.
It was pretty sobering to play with serious athletes.
I played some pickup ball at the old Deseret Gym with a guy who was a football player / track star at some college out of state. He couldn’t shoot, but he would tell you which way he was going to drive… and there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it. Dude was that quick, with hesitation moves… then I just saw the back of his t-shirt. It was like playing against a Manny Hendrix who didn’t feel like shooting that day.
My claim to fame at HPER is I blocked Filipo Mokofisi - twice! - and to his credit, he didn’t throw me through a wall.
I played pickup ball at the DG with Vanilla Ice. True story, apparently he was in town for a concert(?) or some reason and showed up there with a security guard, looking for a game. He was every bit as good at playing ball as he was at singing.
